  Chinese Academy of Sciences - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese: 中国科学院; pinyin: Zhōngguó Kēxuéyuàn), formerly known as Academia Sinica (not to be confused with Taiwan's Academia Sinica currently headquartered in Taipei which shares the same root), is the national academy for the natural sciences of the People's Republic of China.
The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) currently has five sections (Mathematics and Physics, Chemistry, Earth Science, and Technology) as well as eleven branches at Shenyang, Changchun, Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Kunming, Xi’an, Lanzhou and Xinjiang.
CAS also has 84 institutes, one university (the University of Science and Technology of China at Hefei, Anhui), two colleges, four documentation and information centers, three technology support centers and two news and publishing units.

Before the establishment of CASS, the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was composed of 14 research units: Institute of Economics, Institute of Philosophy, Institute of World Religions.
Social Sciences in China (a bimonthly in Chinese and quarterly in English),Historical Research, Archaeology, Economic Research Journal, Philosophical Research, Journal of Law, Literary Review and World Economy are the representatives of the 82 CASS journals.

The Center for European Studies and the Institute of European Studies at Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the editorial house of EUROPE (a bimonthly academic journal) have started the project in 1996, and this report is a part of it.
In the meantime, Chinese scholars share the same opinion that it is important to understand both sides of European welfare system, and it is necessary for Chinese to draw lessons from their experience in building Chinese social security system.
Based on analysis, Chinese scholars argue that the "reform" did have some achievements in decreasing inflation and promoting foreign trade as well as balancing surplus, but this was paid in terms of an increment of unemployment and of widening of social gaps.

A worker at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences confirmed the arrest over the telephone, but she said that the Academy will not comment on this case.
Ching Cheong was found to have the internal speeches of Chinese leaders on his laptop computer, and the two arrested CASS researchers were believed to be the source of that information.

The Academy of Social Sciences in Australia supports an exchange program with the People's Republic of China in cooperation with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) in Beijing.
The aims of the program include collaboration between Australian and Chinese scholars, the opportunity for access to research and research materials not easily accessible outside the countries concerned, and the development of networks of scholars with related interests both within the between the two countries.
The Academy facilitates visits by scholars to specific research institutes and/or conferences in the China, preferably for a period of two weeks.
