This tree has several and the roots of the upper ones are emerging from the foliage mass and welding and fusing with the roots of the low epiphyte that began in the fork of the the two-trunked host tree.
In Hawaii, Chinese Banyan is considered an undesirable "weed" that is difficult to kill.

KAILUA — A shaggy old Chinese banyan near the entrance to Castle Medical Center received a badly needed pruning Wednesday, one of five landmark trees in this town that the Lani-Kailua Outdoor Circle has agreed to trim to assure longevity.
Ellett said the organization paid $7,700 to have five trees pruned, including banyans at Lanikai Elementary School and one in the marsh at the entrance to the town across the street from Windward Boats.
Plans must be approved by the city to prune a banyan at the intersection of South Kalaheo Avenue and Kailua Road in front of Kalapawai Market, and to trim three hau trees growing together in Kailua Beach Park behind the store.

PEAHI – A massive Chinese banyan tree intruding on Peahi Road and neighboring yards, and branching across overhead power lines will be removed by today, county botanist David Sakoda said Friday.
The county could not have done much with Peahi Road’s Chinese banyan, which had a trunk that was really a tangled mass of thick roots at least 6 feet across at the base.
Workers involved in removing the tree this week said the tangled roots were 10 feet across at their widest point where the mass began to separate into branches spreading across the road.
