  MATSU National Scenic Area
The Chinese crested tern is the rarest member of the gull family (Laridae).
Unfortunately for the observers, the four breeding pairs' nesting sites were in amongst those of the greater crested terns, and under these conditions it was very difficult to distinguish how the appearance of their chicks might differ from that of greater crested tern chicks.
At present, the main summer-resident birds in the Matsu Archipelago include seven species: the bridled tern, the greater crested tern, the roseate tern, the fl-naped tern, the fl-tailed gull, the eastern reef heron and the northern white-rumped swift.

Birding In Taiwan - Chinese Crested Tern
This photograph of a Chinese Crested Tern (right; fl-tipped yellow-orange bill) with Caspian Terns (Sterna caspia), was taken by Ong Long-shin, on April 17, 1998, at the mouth of the Pachang Hsi (Pachang River), Chiayi County, Taiwan.
Chinese Crested Tern is a medium sized tern (35–36 cm), a little smaller than Black-headed Gull Larus ridibundus, much smaller than Great Crested Tern Sterna bergii, and Caspian Tern Sterna caspia, but larger than Whiskered Tern Chlidonias hybridus.
It seems quite probable that some Chinese Crested Terns viewed distantly, when the fl tip to the bill would not necessarily be discernible, but which had a white fore crown, may have been passed over as Crested Tern.

 biology - Chinese Crested Tern
The Chinese Crested Tern (Sterna bernsteini) is a seabird of the tern family Sternidae, closely related to Sandwich Tern S.
From Lesser Crested Tern, which it overlaps in wintering distribution, it can be told by the white rump and paler grey mantle, as well as the fl tip to the bill.
It is a critically endangered species, previously thought extinct, with a known population of only four pairs rediscovered in 2000, nesting in a Greater Crested Tern colony on an islet in the Matsu Islands, just off the coast of Fujian Province, China, and wintering south to the Philippines.

With a world population not known to exceed 10 individuals; Chinese Crested Tern is the world's rarest tern and indeed one of the rarest birds in the world.
Chinese Crested Tern was though to be extinct until 2000, when four pairs were discovered breeding in a colony of Greater Crested Terns on the Taiwanese occupied island of Matzu, close to the coast of China's Fujian province.
Until recently, Chinese Crested Tern was believed to be extinct, but was discovered breeding in 2000 on Matzu, a small island under Taiwanese administration, only 8 km from the coast of Fujian province, China.

Sandwich Tern - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unlike some of the smaller white terns, it is not very aggressive toward potential predators, relying on the sheer density of the nests (often only 20-30cm apart) and nesting close to other more aggressive species such as Arctic Terns and Black-headed Gulls to avoid predation.
This is a medium-large tern, 37-43cm long with an 85-97cm wingspan, which is unlikely to be confused within most of its range, although the South American race could be confused with the Elegant Tern.
Chinese Crested Tern is the most similar to Sandwich, but has a reversal of the bill colour, yellow with a fl tip; it does not overlap in range with Sandwich Tern so confusion is unlikely.

Tern - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Terns are seabirds in the family Sternidae, previously considered a subfamily (Sterninae) of the gull family Laridae (van Tuinen et al.
Most terns were formerly treated as belonging into one large genus Sterna, with the other genera being small, but analysis of DNA sequences supports the splitting of Sterna into several smaller genera (see list, below) (del Hoyo et al.
These results are in disagreement with other molecular and morphological studies (see Paton and Baker, 2006) and are best interpreted to prove an extraordinary amount of molecular convergent evolution between the terns and these waders, or as retention of an ancient genotype.
