		A critical essay concerning the whole of a director's work tends to be based on the "auteur theory", isolating common themes and imagery on a given filmography, something that generates some difficulties on critics that try to analyse the films of people that always try to reinvent themselves, like Takeshi Kitano.
		A Chinese Odyssey 2002 (2002) is, at its starting point, a silly, nonsense comedy ('mo lei-tau') made for the lucrative Chinese New Year season, a period when families go to theatres to watch something "fun" and "light".
		Of course, this is not rare on Chinese cinema, but here the reference is another Huangmei diao film, The Love Eterne (1962), from where the segment in which Yingtai is trying to hint he's actually a girl is adapted into the song "Zui Yi Chang".

		Chinese Odyssey 2002 was Hong Kong's 2002 Lunar Year hit, a regular event that sees in the new year with a usually high profile comedy that attracts many cinema goers.
		Chinese Odyssey 2002 won the best picture award at the 9th Annual Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards, where Faye Wong also picked up best actress, although for my money's worth that honour should have gone to Vicki Zhao Wei.
		Chinese Odyssey 2002 is a wonderful little film, lovingly crafted with a good helping of effective comedy and timing.

		Bizarre in the sense of a chick that is "disguised" as a man attracts the attention of a certain woman but she herself falls for that woman's brother, if that sounds like a mess wait until the emperor gets involved.
		HK cinema may be in a slump of late but they are not far from returning to the golden years of the past with a whole new high tech quality.
		On average HK DVDs are mostly mediocre this is probably due to VCD still being the standard but anyways the Mei Ah release of Chinese Odyssey 2002 pretty much blows everything away and is right there in the North American standard of quality.

		New to me is a sub-genre called the 'New Year film', the Chinese cinema equivalent of a British stage pantomime, a celebration of heroic romances roping in star names to exhibit comedic talents most unexpected of them.
		Chinese Odyssey 2002 is a worthy introduction produced by Wong Kar-wai and directed by Jeff Lau, it is a rich and talented cast led by Tony Leung and Faye Wong, returnees from Kar-wai's Chungking Express.
		Not all the references are unknown to a world cinema junkie like me. There are references to other Wong Kar-wai films identifiable or believed understood, the blessing here is that you don't know to what extent the references run and can simply get on with being entertained.
