This anomalous bird shares affinities with both warblers and babblers, but as yet it is unclear just what it is. That, however, is unimportant, we had seen them well and that was all that mattered.
This highly distinctive bird is usually treated as a race of Chinese Grey Shrike, although it was originally described as a distinct species, Lanius giganteus, by Przewalski in 1887.
It is much larger than Chinese Grey Shrike, wing length ranges between 134-147mm compared with 120-126mm for Chinese Grey Shrike.

poecikorhyncha หรือ Indian Spotbill ที่พบกระจายพันธุ์อยู่ทั่วอนุทวีปอินเดีย รวมทั้งบังคลาเทศ และ เนปาล ซึ่งตัวผู้ จะมีจุดขนาดใหญ่ และ เห็นชัดเจนกว่าตัวเมีย ส่วนเป็ดเทา ที่พบในประเทศไทย จะเป็นชนิดย่อย A.p.
haringtoni หรือ Burmese Spotbill ซึ่ง พบกระจายพันธุ์ จากทางด้าน ตะวันออก ของ อินเดีย พม่า ตอนใต้ของจีน ลาว และ เวียตนาม ชนิดย่อยนี้ จะมีลักษณะ คล้ายคลึงกับ Indian Spotbill มาก แต่จุดสีแดง ตรงมุมปาก จะมีขนาดเล็ก จนมองไม่ค่อยเห็น
ของเป็ดเทา จะ แตกต่างกันไปในแต่ละ ภูมิภาค มีตั้งแต่เดือน มิถุนายน ไป จนถึง ตุลาคม ในช่วงนี้ จุดสีแดง ตรงโคนปากของ Indian Spotbill และ Burmese Spotbill ตัวผู้จะขยายใหญ่ และ มีสีสด เห็นได้ชัดเจน เป็ดเทาอาจจับคู่กันตามลำพัง หรือ รวมกันอยู่เป็นกลุ่มเล็กๆ โดยสร้างรังตามพื้นดิน ท่ามกลางกอหญ้ารกๆ ไม่ไกลจากแหล่งน้ำ ใช้หญ้า และ พืชน้ำ วางสุมกัน แล้วตัวเมียจะจิกขนอุยที่หน้าอก มารองรัง ให้อบอุ่น หลังจากนั้น แม่เป็ด จะวางไข่ครั้งละ 7 - 9 ฟอง ใช้เวลากกไข่อยู่ราว 24 วัน ไข่จึงฟักออกเป็นตัว ลูกเป็ดแรกเกิด มีขนอุยสีดำด้านบนลำตัว และ มีสีเหลืองบริเวณด้านล่าง และ เดินตามพ่อแม่ออกไปหากินได้เลย

Supporting cast: Chinese Blackbird (which, as I am sure people who have seen it will agree, is very different from its less muscular European cousin), Azure-winged Magpie, Long-tailed Tit*, Goldcrest*, Spotbill, Mallard, Teal, Heron, Chinese Bulbul, Little Grebe, Tree Sparrow, Spotted Dove, Feral Pigeon*, White Wagtail, and Great Tit.
The problem is that, in Chinese, "Sheraton" and "Hilton" are very similar, and we were taken to the wrong one.
What is important, however, is the size of the wintering-population of cranes, geese, storks, and other waterbirds that depend on the Chinese bird reserves; and the numerous other birds populations in China that rely on undisturbed mountain forests.

The day started out quietly, save for the bellowing Chinese climbers exercising their lungs and testing the walls echoing capabilities, but soon the birds began to wake and move about.
One of the birds, a young male, apparently forgot he was supposed to skulk and instead sat out in the open for several long minutes while we studied every feather detail through the scopes.
The anticipation built as we made the short ferry crossing from the mainland and even more as we were transported across the island on golf carts and checked into our cabins, an anticipation that reached a climax when a White’s Thrush streaked through the cabin area and disappeared among the bushes.

 Winter birding in eastern and south-western China(Shanghai, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Guizhou, and Yunnan)
The other, which came within a yard of it, had presumably been attracted by the penned-bird's singing.
Took the 1530 bus from Shanghai to Yancheng - which lies about 400 km NNW of Shanghai.  Arrived there surprisingly quickly - the 5 hour scheduled trip beaten by about an hour.
The lake I am referring to is just to the west of town (actually it was less like a lake and more like a marsh at the time we were there).

 Birdwatching Trip Report from Beidaihe (and surrounding area), Hebei, China
On to Lighthouse Point for the last hour of light.  3 Hoopoes had not realised that they, too, should be south of the Yangtze at this time (although it is not inconceivable that these were very early migrants).  The single Chinese Bulbul, however, was almost certainly a resident.
Walked up the mountain in the hope of finding Koklass Pheasant (which breeds here).  Just to further prove that some things never change; just as in '94, '95, and '96, again failed to connect with this elusive bird.
Slightly late back to the taxi, but still time to scramble up the hillside opposite to the park entrance, where I'd heard a Chinese Hill Warbler (White-browed Chinese Warbler).  Eventually managed to get good views of 2 birds.

Those that occur in small numbers include Dalmatian pelican Pelecanus crispus (E) (15 in 1986, and 33 in 1988), oriental white stork Ciconia boyciana (R) (2 in 1988), fl-faced spoonbill Platalea minor (E) (28 in 1988) and Saunders' gull Larus saundersi (R).
The reserve is an important staging and wintering area for a number of migratory waterfowl including Chinese pond heron Ardeola bacchus, little egret Egretta garzetta, great egret E.
Other waterfowl include several hundred little grebe Tachybaptus ruficollis, great cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo (over 500), common shelduck Tadorna tadorna, common teal Anas crecca, spotbill duck A.

A subspecies of Chinese parrotbill Paradoxornis heudei polivanovi occurs in the reed beds (Jianjian, 1989).
Other notable species include Oriental white stork Ciconia ciconia boyciana (K) and whooper swan Cygnus cygnus.
