  Chinese Box (1997)
It's also the time that is left for John, the principal character of the film, a freelance journalist trying to store on film and in words the transition and dying of leukemia.
The strength of the film and what makes it survive well the decade since its realization resides however in the rendition of the city, of its infinite colors and smells, of the crowd and the noise, of its hopes, fears and dreams in the wake of the falling under Communist rule.
'Chinese Box' catches both a moment to remember in history and a beautiful love story to remember as well, on the background of a world in transition to an unknown destination.

(Box turtles often have small round holes in their shell from the pincers used to collect them.) American Box turtles are partially aquatic turtles: unlike aquatic turtles such as the red-eared sliders, painted turtles and other fresh and brackish water turtles, the Terrapene ssp.

CHINESE BOX - LIONS GATE SIGNATURE SERIES DVD
In both Chinese Box and Life Is Cheap...But Toilet Paper is Expensive, he tries to wrap the entirety of the island around the head of one passive spectator, denying multiple entry points and causing unnecessary confusion.
Chinese Box is the less interesting of the two films, largely because it's the most conventional and overwritten.
Chinese Box (disc one), presented in an "unrated director's cut,"has a slight edge on Life Is Cheap (disc two)--the later film's teeming, detail-crammed mise-en-scène perhaps required more attention than the more austere (and more obscure) B feature.

 Images - Chinese Box
Chinese Box, possessing both the aesthetic fancies of Greenaway and the music video chic of Irma Vep, attains its own luminescence simply by realizing and sharpening the focus of an insatiable nostalgia: the loss of Hong Kong in July 1997, seen through the eyes of a dying British expatriate.
Chinese Box, however, scalds with it own thought-out intelligence; the steely undertone of the political agenda puts the brains back into these Orientalist cinematic excursions.
Chinese Box is a thinking picture; in contrast to Greenaway's riotous calligraphy and Assayas' fuzzy video-image scribbles, there is calculation, depth and sagacity before the ink hits the paper in Wayne Wang's film.

Chinese Room Argument [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The Chinese room argument - John Searle's (1980a) thought experiment and associated (1984) derivation - is one of the best known and widely credited counters to claims of artificial intelligence (AI), i.e., to claims that computers do or at least can (someday might) think.
Whatever meaning Searle-in-the-room's computation might derive from the meaning of the Chinese symbols which he processes will not be intrinsic to the process or the processor but "observer relative," existing only in the minds of beholders such as the native Chinese speakers outside the room.
To the Chinese room's champions - as to Searle himself - the experiment and allied argument have often seemed so obviously cogent and decisively victorious that doubts professed by naysayers have seemed discreditable and disingenuous attempts to salvage "strong AI" at all costs.

The film's love story is somewhat aimless and ultimately unimportant, but Chinese Box (even the title suggests a place that holds secrets within its borders) remains a fascinating film in the semi-documentary tradition, capturing the psychology of its time and place with compelling immediacy.
Local Chinese in Hong Kong were largely unable to understand the film, citing Wang fabricated facts (such as the demonstration students setting themselves on fire, or the suicide shooting at the club to protest the Chinese Handover) while the whole affair was directed at a foreign (international) market.
Before "Chinese Box", Wang made an independent feature "Life is cheap...but toilet paper is expensive" and it was a wild rollercoaster ride of the Hong Kong.
