The Chinese language, spoken in the form of Standard Mandarin, is the official language of the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China on Taiwan, as well as one of four official languages of Singapore, and one of six official languages of the United Nations.
Old Chinese (T:上古漢語S:上古汉语P:Shànggǔ Hànyǔ), sometimes known as 'Archaic Chinese', was the language common during the early and middle Zhou Dynasty (11th to 7th centuries B.C.), texts of which include inscriptions on bronze artifacts, the poetry of the Shijing, the history of the Shujing, and portions of the Yijing (I Ching).
Chinese morphology is strictly bound to a set number of syllables with a fairly rigid construction which are the morphemes, the smallest building blocks, of the language.

Yingxi (shadow play): the initial Chinese conception about film
Chinese cinema before the 1920s made very slow progress and the most important reason was the lack of talent in the fields of film technology and film creation.
Chinese viewers of these films were not only attracted by this realistic illusion, but were extremely astonished by the "truthfulness" of film.
The exceptional astonishment of Chinese audience towards film was the result of their acceptance of various traditional Chinese art forms as aimed at being fictitious rather than real in appearance - an aesthetic which constituted a basic difference between Western and Chinese conceptions of art.

Jordan's China Handbook: The Chinese Language(s)
Since Chinese tend to name languages after places, and since English tends to use the same names for languages and the people who speak them, it is useful at this point to include a few additional terms you will find in the anthropological literature referring to regional variants of Chinese language or culture.
As we saw when we discussed the writing system, it is possible for literary Chinese to be quite different in syntax from spoken Chinese, and a result of this was the growth of a literate tradition that required considerable education to manipulate it.
It is, of course, almost as foreign to speakers of Non-Mandarin variants of Chinese as the old literary standard was, for the languages of China vary not only in pronunciation, but in vocabulary and word order (a fact rarely appreciated by northern Chinese or by Chinese who have been the victims of school system propaganda).

A Literary History of the American West   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
There was established from the onset of Chinese immigration a pattern of statutory and social exclusion that paralleled the development of Chinese settlement in the West, determining where and at what Chinese might be employed, where they might live, and how they might be schooled.
Another significant Chinese development from this period is the common use of Cantonese dialects in newspapers published both in Hong Kong and in the Chinese-American communities of San Francisco, Seattle and Los Angeles.
It should also be emphasized that the first wave of Chinese immigration came during a period in world history when the ancient injustices of colonial and neocolonial exploitation of Africa and Asia for slave and coolie labor would soon cease.

Translation between Chinese and English seems to be more difficult than that between any two European languages, because the fact that the two languages are of two different language families, namely, Indo-European and Sino-Tibetan, gives rise to many more differences in mode of expression, grammar, syntax, meaning system.
Chinese speakers seldom pay attention to formal cohesion and their expression seems to be meaning-driven.
