Tseng Yung-Ching is a master in the northern school of flute performance.
His virtuosity on the bamboo flute is captured in the 13 tracks on this disk.
He "uses his flutist's breath control to shape the vocal lines, and the voice of his flute, though wordless, still conveys all the nuance of the words' meaning, and all the modulations of voice that create the opera's rich tapestry of drama, speech, and music."

9,000 Year Old Chinese Flutes - Articles
Chinese archeologists have unearthed what is believed to be the oldest known playable musical instrument, a seven-holed flute fashioned 9,000 years ago from the hollow wing bone of a large bird.
The Chinese scientists had published their work in journals only in their own country, which in terms of making it known worldwide "is as effective as entombing it in the Great Pyramids," said the Brookhaven scientist, Garman Harbottle, an expert in using nuclear science in archeological and fine arts applications.
The 9,000-year-old flute that weathered the centuries to remain in unusually fine condition was found at the village of Jiahu, located by the central Yellow River valley in China.

However, this flute, the name of which is pronounced the same as the word for "music" in Chinese, used to be an important instrument in many ancient ceremonial rituals.
Two ancient instruments, the dizi, or bamboo flute, which was played transversely and the xiao, another form of bamboo flute, but played vertically, seemed to have become the dominant wind instruments.
However, the enigma of the mysterious yue and the bone flutes seemed to explain one another in the eyes of Liu Zhengguo, a scholar of Chinese music history who is also skilled in playing the transverse bamboo flute (dizi) and its vertical twin the xiao.

Chinese flutes have also been made of other materials than bamboo, including jade, ivory, metal, and bone, but bamboo is by far the most typical.
Thus, a flute marked "C" by the 3rd hole will have a fundamental of G, and be equivalent to a Western fife or flute at G. A flute marked "G" by the 3rd hole will have a fundamental of D, and be in Western terms a D flute.
Chinese transverse flutes are rarely lower than Western G; for a low D (G in Chinese terms) flute one usually uses the xiao, an endblown flute.

Dizi - Chinese flute   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-17)
This fibre, known as di mo and either made from the inner layer of a certain type of bamboo or from a type of river reed, is readily available in Chinese music stores.
Modern dizi can be found with additional keys to aid in playing accidentals, but traditionally players had a set of dizi, one for each desired key, and accidentals and slides were accomplished by very subtle adjustments of the fingers to cover only a quarter or half of a hole.
Although a relatively easy instrument at first, the standard for good dizi playing is extremely high, and professional dizi players from China are stunning in their virtuosity, although they often lack the emotional depth that is found in flute playing from other cultures.
