  Chinese Idiom
Some believe that those expressions which originated from alien culture should not be considered Chinese cheng yu, for instance, some derived from Buddhism, and "armed to the teeth", "kill two birds with one stone", "use old bottles for new wine", 'a wolf in sheep's clothing" and "eye for eye" (which came from foreign language).
In comparing the definitions of the "idiom" in English and cheng yu in Chinese, we find that they are not exactly the same.
But in Chinese, especially in classic Chinese, repetition is quite often employed, yet without giving the readers the feeling of redundancy or superfluity.

Four-character idiom - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Four-character idioms, or chéngyǔ (Traditional Chinese: 成語, Simplified Chinese: 成语, literally "to become (part of) the language") are widely used in Classical Chinese, a literary form used in the Chinese written language from antiquity until 1919, and are still commonly used in Vernacular writing today.
However, some idioms such as "空穴来风" (pinyin: kōngxué láifēng, literally "an open hole draws the wind") which means to lay one's self open to criticism, and "素面朝天" are so widely misunderstood that their literal meaning are used despite their original meaning.
The idiom itself is not derived from a specific occurrence from which a moral may be explicitly drawn; instead, it is succinct in its original meaning and would likely be intelligible to an individual learned in formal written Chinese.

Idiom - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In linguistics, idioms are widely assumed to be figures of speech that contradict the principle of compositionality, however some debate has recently arisen on this subject.
Idioms are, in essence, often colloquial metaphors — terms which require some foundational knowledge, information, or experience, to use only within a culture where parties must have common reference.
While many idioms are clearly based in conceptual metaphors such as "time as a substance", "time as a path", "love as war" or "up is more", the idioms themselves are often not particularly essential, even when the metaphors themselves are.

 Chinese Tattoos
While it is undeniable that classic Chinese characters have a universal beauty which can easily be appreciated regardless of whether one can understand the often subtle meanings conveyed by the ancient designs, some Westerners have permanently embossed their bodies with symbols that are at times oddly nonsensical and at other times are bizarrely meaningless.
In the best case scenario, the tattooee has done her research and consulted with a native Chinese speaker about all of the denotations and connotations of the specific characters chosen, verified that the characters are genuinely Chinese and perhaps even asked about the aesthetics of the font used.

These are the humble beginnings of a collection of Chinese proverbs (歇後語 in pinyin: xie4 hou4 yu3; 諺語 yan4 yu3) and idioms, given in (and sorted by) pinyin transcription.
Formulaic saying/expressions (成語 cheng2 yu3 -- "to become a saying") are known as four-character idioms (exceptions exist in the number of characters, though the majority are four).
Many other expressions, however, develop around a rhyme or rhythm of intonation, and because the verbal distinction is tied to the regional dialect, such a proverb or idiom would not necessarily be understood or used outside of that region.

 Du Ponceau on Chinese
It is otherwise with the Chinese language; every syllable of it is significant, and is never employed but in the sense of its meaning.
Be this as it may, as the Chinese characters represent the words of the language, and are intended to awaken the remembrance of them in the mind, they are not therefore independent of sounds, for words are sounds.
I do not mean to say that they cannot be applied to other monosyllabic idioms, (and they are, in fact, applied even to polysyllabic languages, as I shall presently show,) I only contend that their meaning cannot be understood alike in the different languages in which they are used.

Jacket 23 - Eliot Weinberger: Rexroth From the Chinese
Many Chinese poets, whether in exile or in Taoist or Buddhist retreat, had inhabited landscapes as dramatic and wild as those of the American West, and the poems they wrote had no equivalent in world literature, where nature tended to be domesticated or fearsome.
Chinese poetry as a whole was a Balzacian human comedy from a distant place and time that ultimately didn’t seem so remote at all.
Chinese poetry entered the American and, to a much lesser degree, English poetic consciousness at exactly the right moment to purge the rhetoric and moralizing of 19th century Romantic poetry and the even more moralistic, preachy poetry of the 90s.
