Chinkultic is 16 degrees 15 min N. At this latitude, the sun was a bit less than 4 degrees from the zenith on May 21; zenith passage actually occurred on May 6.
The ball on the Chinkultic disk is inscribed with the head of Hun Ahaw, one of the Hero Twins who defeated the Lords of Xibalba, the underworld, making creation of the present world possible.
The period of invisibility between disappearance in the west at sunset and heliacal rise in the east marks Venus' sojourn in the underworld.

Just mention Chinkultic and the driver will drop you off at a track two km off the La Trinataria to Montebello road, thirty km from the Pan-American Highway.
Once at the track to Chinkultic be prepared for a fifteen-to-twenty minute walk.

 Chinkuiltic
Chinkultic is located about 100 kilometers from the town of San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas near the border with Guatemala.
Chinkultic contains around 200 mounds grouped into six clusters, which include a ball court.
This unit is circular in form and has as its central motif a player who is seen striking a large ball.

He had read a book on the Mayan ruins before the trip and was seeking out some of the less well known ruins.
He had tried to go to the ruins near Rancho Esmeralda, Tonina, which are right outside Ocosingo, and stay at Rancho Esmeralda, however, he could not stay at the Rancho as it had been taken over by the indigenous peoples.
Rained fairly heavily on our way out from Chinkultic, but once we got over the steep mountains via the windy roads the rains stopped.

In the east, where the tropical rainforest grows, the Maya from the Classic period (250 to 900 AD) achieved their florescence through the establishment of large cities that exercised political and economic control over a wide area.
The most important of these cities were Palenque, Toniná, Yaxchilán, Bonampak and Chinkultic.
Some of the characteristic features of the Classic period include hieroglyphic script, the construction of domes that were not based on the principle of the arch and the representation of both men and women.

The Chinkultic Archaeological zone is located amid pine forests near Comitán de Dominguez and Lagunas de Montebello, at 1,500 meters (about 4,920 feet) above sea level, in a long, lush valley.

In addition to learning about the two ballcourts at Copan, and studying the iconography and aesthetics of the ballcourt markers, this July program will also provide discussions of the ballgames of the Aztec, Mixtec, Teotihuacans, and the Maya of Tikal, Seibal, Yaxchilan, Chinkultic, Calakmul, Piedras Negras, Palenque, and naturally the many courts of Chichen Itza.
