Wader - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Waders, called Shorebirds in North America (where "wader" is used to refer to long-legged wading birds such as storks and herons), are members of the order Charadriiformes, excluding the more marine web-footed seabird groups.
The latter are the skuas (Stercoraracidae), gulls (Laridae), terns (Sternidae), skimmers (Rhynchopidae), sheathbill (Chionididae) and auks (Alcidae).
This leaves about 210 species, most of which are associated with wetland or coastal environments.

Though they may be named like Antarctic pigeon by its general aspect and flight mode, the reality is that they correspond to a tottaly different order and family.
Chionididae, included in Charadriiformes order, is a family with only two species: Chionis minor which inhabits in the antarctic zone below the Indian Ocean, and the Chilean species (Chionis alba) that inhabits in the antarctic zone below South America.
Of the antarctic birds, this is the only one that don't have webbed feet; however, it's capable to swim with great facility.
