Thomas Chippendale - LoveToKnow 1911   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Chippendale has even shared with Sir William Chambers the obloquy of introducing the Chinese style, but he appears to have done nothing worse than "conquer," as Alexandre Dumas used to call it, the ideas of other people.
Chippendale's work has stood the supreme test of posterity more completely than that of any of his rivals or successors; and, unlike many men of genius, we know him to have been warmly appreciated in his lifetime.
Chippendale was buried on the 13th of November 1779, apparently at the church of St Martin-in-the-Fields, and administration of his intestate estate was granted to his widow Elizabeth.

 Chippendale
Thomas Chippendale's new and different-looking chairs and tables were the vogue in England, but it was at least 1755 before cabinetmakers in America copied any of Chippendale's designs.
For a time, too, many of Chippendale's pieces borrowed from the rococo appearance of French Louis XV furniture and were really an embellishment of the simpler Queen Anne style by means of elaborate lines and touches.
Chippendale also used gilding, some veneer, and fretwork galleries around small tables and the tops of cabinet pieces as other forms of decoration.

The earliest trustworthy evidence of Chippendale's presence in London is his marriage licence recording this event at St George's Chapel, Mayfair "19 May 1748 Thomas Chippendale and Catherine Redshaw of St Martin-in-the-Fields".
During 1753 Chippendale was busy producing drawings for his ambitious publication The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director and so needed a smart address from which to launch it and contrive an opportunity to dedicate it to the Earl of Northumberland.
Chippendale also bought in certain items and the extent of his sub-contracting to outworkers or specialists is not fully known.

 Chippendale--The Royalty of Antique Furniture
Chippendale created his Director as a catalogue from which his wealthy patrons could choose particular elements for their furniture, which would then be custom made for them in his workshop.
While there are six different basic Chippendale style legs–the lion’s paw, the ball and claw, the late Chippendale, the Marlborough, the club and the spade–he based three of them on the cabriole shape which is an elegant, serpentine style ending in a distinctive foot.
Chippendale never employed a maker’s mark, so the only method of establishing his authorship is to find one of his original bills, usually preserved among estate papers, or equivalent documentation.

 Antiques Roadshow/Antique Speak: Chippendale
Chippendale mixed and melded the extravagantly sinuous Rococo style with the Gothic and Chinese styles to come up with a hybrid that was embraced on both sides of the Atlantic, displacing the more angular Queen Anne style.
Chippendale brought prominence to his designs in 1754 by publishing the detailed Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director, one of the earliest furniture design books, which was devoured by both makers and sellers of furniture.
It is interesting to note, however, that despite the forms with which his name is today synonymous, Chippendale's reputation in his own day was as a maker of furniture, a career that spanned several decades and a range of styles.

Among the numerous pieces stamped with his style, it is possible to assign unquestionably to his own workshop only those for which the original bills still remain, as in the case of Harewood House and Nostell Priory, whose furnishings were created by him.
Chippendale’s name is emphatically identified with the extensive variety of chair types that he developed—from geometrical to Chinese, lattice, or sumptuously carved and interlaced forms.
Chippendale’s varied output also included desks; mirror frames; hanging bookshelves; settees, with which he was especially successful; china cabinets and bookcases, frequently with fretted cornices and latticework glazed doors; and tables with delicately fretted galleries and distinctive cluster-column legs of Gothic inspiration.

 From Chippendale's Workshop
The furniture of Thomas Chippendale was never cheap, and the sound workmanship and good quality of that made by contemporary makers, and those who had learned their art under him, indicate that there were no common imitations of the great master's designs.
Thomas Chippendale could not have been narrow-minded in his views, nor could he have wished to retain the sole copyright of his designs, for his book was sold with the avowed object of inducting other master men in the designs he was wishful to popularise.
Referring to some well-known examples of noted sets made by Chippendale, Mr Cescinsky, in his work "English Furniture of the Eighteenth Century," mentions a set of chairs said to have been made for Marie Antoinette on a model which was evidently repeated more than once.

Furniture designs from this period by Chippendale as well as by Darly and Manwaring, often suggest the natural shape and form of the original timber, sprouting as twigs and boughs interlaced to become chair backs and legs.
Chippendale Antiques antique furniture and lighting is an exceptional example of the revival of this rococo aesthetic, extending the tradition of naturalised Chippendale Antiques and man controlling nature, by reconstructing a natural twig and branch rustic look from skilfully carved solid timber.
