Chippawa is a village located within the City of Niagara Falls, Ontario.
While the town was named, and incorrectly spelled, after the Chippewa Indian band, the spelling Chippewa is incorrect for the town and the surrounding area.
The village was founded in 1850, and became part of the City of Niagara Falls, Ontario by amalgamation in 1968.

Another version of the Paul Bruno story, this one according to Andrew Swailes of Port McNicol, Ontario, was recorded by Herb Hopper: "A child by the name of Paul Brunei (Bruno) was found on the steps of Mount St. Louis church by Thomas Swailes" (the son of John and Isabella born in England in 1815).
Her marriage license shows she was born in Ontario and was 20 years of age at the time.

Language:: The Ojibwe language--otherwise anglicized as Chippewa, Ojibwa or Ojibway and known to its own speakers as Anishinabe or Anishinaabemowin--is an Algonquian tongue spoken by 50,000 people in the northern United States and southern Canada.
The Ottawa have always been politically independent from the Ojibwe, but their language is essentially the same--speakers of all five dialects, including Ottawa, can understand each other readily.
Ojibwe and Chippewa are renderings of the same Algonquian word, "puckering," probably referring to their characteristic moccasin style.

The Skill shown by the American soldiers and commanders at Chippewa showed that the poorly motivated and trained militias seen at Detroit and Queenston in 1812 were being replaced by professional soldiers.
Fort Chippewa was built to protect the southern terminus of the Niagara Portage - the Battle of Chippewa was fought near this point in July 1814.
The bloody stalemate which followed on the Niagara at Chippewa, Lundy’s Lane and Fort Erie was probably the best that could be expected at this stage of the war given improvements in the training and leadership of American forces.

Nov 16 1838 Prescott Ontario - Republican Colonel Nils Von Schoultz surrenders with 137 of his Hunters Lodge rebels after the four day battle of the Windmill; Hunters' losses estimated at 80, and British and Canadian losses were 20 dead and 60 wounded; Von Schoultz and 10 other men are later hanged at Kingston.

The third Chippewa, a wooden screw steamer gunboat, was launched 14 September 1861 by Webb and Bell, New York; outfitted at New York Navy Yard; and commissioned 13 December 1861, Lieutenant Andrew Bryson in command.
During this time she exchanged fire with the enemy at Forts Macon and Caswell and Federal Point Batteries, and assisted in the capture of a blockade runner, the English brig Napier 29 July 1862.
Chippewa departed Wilmington, N.C., 1 March 1865 and steamed up the James River for patrol duty until 15 May, engaging enemy batteries at Dutch Gap Canal on 1 and 2 April.

 Chippewa Indian Tribe
According to tradition, the Chippewa were part of a large body of Indians which came from the east—how much east of their later homes is uncertain—and after reaching Mackinaw separated into the Chippewa, Ottawa, and Potawatomi.
The Chippewa afterward pushed their way west along both shores of Lake Superior, and in the eighteenth century, assisted by the adoption of firearms, drove the Dakota from Mille Lacs, and spread over the northern part of Minnesota and southern Manitoba as far as the Turtle Mountains.
In Canada the Chippewa of Ontario, including the Nipissing, numbered at the same time about 9,000, while in Manitoba and the Northwest Territories there were 17,129 Chippewa and Cree on reservations under the same agencies.

The Chippewas were the largest and most powerful tribe in the Great Lakes country, with a range that extended from the edge of Iroquois territory in the Northeast to the Sioux-dominated Great Plains.
