Geographically, the Chippewa County of 1846 extended all the way from Lake Pepin on the Mississippi River, in the form of a crude Indian arrowhead which had its point near what is now Upson in Iron County, not far from Hurley.
After Wisconsin became a state in 1848, the Legislature revised the western boundary of Chippewa County so that it was almost a straight line from just south of what is now Solon Springs in Douglas County to the present village of Maiden Rock on Lake Pepin.
Chippewa County boundaries have been refined and redrawn so many times, so much territory has been shifted to other jurisdictions, that Chippewa has been called the "mother" county of northwestern Wisconsin.
