Barnet Museum was opened in March 1938 at 31 Wood Street, to house the collection of the Barnet and District Local History Society.
Chipping Barnet grew up around an important junction of Wood Street, and the road that was later to be known as the ‘Great North Road'.
One of these is East Barnet, which formed part of the original manor of Chipping and East Barnet it is the latter that appears to have been the focus of the earliest settlement.

It is the belief of the older natives the "Barnet stands on the highest ground betwixt London and York." The town consists of a straggling street over a mile long, chiefly of small commonplace houses, with two or three shorter streets diverging from it.
Barnet Church, St John the Baptist, which stands in what was the centre of the town, was erected by John de la Moote, abbot of St Albans, about 1400, the architect being Beauchamp.
The living of Barnet is a curacy, held with the rectory of East Barnet till the death of the late incumbent in 1866, when the livings were separated.

On the western boundary of Barnet, the Edgware Road, Watling Street, or A5, is part of a major Roman route from London to the north and most Roman archaeological finds have been made along here and elsewhere in Hendon.
Chipping Barnet was founded around 1100 after the creation of the new Roman route.
Hadley Green was the centre of the bloody Battle of Barnet in 1471, when the Yorkists under Edward IV defeated the Lancastrians and killed the Earl of Warwick during the War of the Roses.

High Barnet or Chipping Barnet is a place in the London Borough of Barnet, some 10 miles (17 km) north north-west of Charing Cross and within the northerly bounds of the M25 motorway.
The town was the site of the Battle of Barnet in 1471, where Yorkist troops led by King Edward IV killed the rebellious "Kingmaker" Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick and Warwick's brother, John Neville, 1st Marquess of Montagu.

Comparing Barnet with other London Boroughs is not just a matter of population size, but geography and in this respect Barnet, unlike many of the boroughs quoted has no natural centre of population or civil administration.
By the time the Barnet Times picked it up as a news story, there was very little time for considered opinions, and indeed this latest consultation was only been reported in the Barnet Times last week (21 July, page 25).

When the Normans came to the area many of the oaks were employed in the building of St Albans Abbey and for many centuries the land remained under the jurisdiction of the abbey as part of Hertfordshire.
East Barnet Baptist Church was founded in May 1910, and met together in a small hut, familiarly known as the 'tin tabernacle',in East Barnet Road.
In 1930 the foundation stone was laid at the present site on the corner of East Barnet and Crescent Roads, on which was built a traditional baptist church building.
