Lincoln Wayne "Chips" Moman was born in 1936 in LaGrange, where he learned to play guitar as a child.
Moman encouraged them to relocate the recording studio to an old movie theater that he had discovered and to work with rhythm and blues artists.
Moman's guidance and the down-home atmosphere of American Sound inspired some of Presley's strongest recordings in years, including "Suspicious Minds," "In the Ghetto," "Kentucky Rain," and "Rubberneckin,'" all of which charted in the top ten.

Class of '55 is a music album by Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and Carl Perkins released in 1986 through Chips Moman's American Sound Studios and Smash Records.
While the album was in part a tribute to Elvis Presley, it was mainly a commemoration of those young performing hopefuls, the four album participants included, who came to Sun Records in 1955 to make music in the new era of Rock and Roll.
The recorded "Interviews From the Class of '55 Recording Sessions" earned the 1987 Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album for the four performers plus for producer Chips Moman, Sam Phillips and Ricky Nelson.

He had two multi-track recorders: an Ampex 4-track and an old Ampex 3-track (our first Downbeats' demos were cut on a similar machine.) Moman used the 3-track most of the time, only bouncing to 4-track if he needed to overdub strings, horns, etc. He had a tiny live echo chamber and used it sparingly.
