Chiquimula has a great number of attractions, but the seven of greatest tradition are Volcán and Laguna de Ipala, Volcán Quezaltepeque, Poza de la Pila, the spa on the Río Jocotán, La Piedra de los Compadres, Cerro de Montecristo and Ruta Histórica del Peregrino.

Most travellers who come here are on their way to or from the Maya ruins of Copán, just over the border in Honduras, and though the town has long been an important transport terminal, there's little else of note save a massive ruined colonial church on the edge of town beside the highway.
Everything you're likely to need in Chiquimula is east of the plaza, and close to the bus terminal on 3 Calle, which leads towards the main highway.
Otherwise the only evening entertainment in Chiquimula is at the Cine Liv on the plaza.

In Chiquimula, find the Transportes Vilma office and the bus to El Florido by walking through the market stalls on the left of the bus on which you arrived.
Get off in Chiquimula when you see the buses lined up in the square or continue to the terminal and walk back through the market.

Chiquimula is a decent-sized town with a great bus station that you will really only ever visit if you're bussing it to Copan Ruinas in Honduras.
There is one "typical" store upstairs in the airport who will change your Lempiras, but it's not a great rate, and if you wait until Miami, Florida or somewhere else in the states, you'll get a horrible rate.
When you head back from the frontier to Chiquimula, you'll get dropped off near the terminal or at the private terminal in town and head back over to the main terminal.

We left at 6.30 am and took the bus to Chiquimula, this takes 3 hours, 18 Q. There you need to change to an old bus and the rough road to El Florido (border post) begins and takes about 2,5 hours, 15 Q. You'll arrive there around noon.
Another more popular option is to go to Chiquimula and spend the night there.
For some people, Chiquimula is a hop off point when going to Copan.
