Chiquimula is the cradle of the ch´ortí culture and takes pride in its possession of the traditions strongly rooted in the myths and legends of the country.
With the establishment of the colonial regime the territory of Chiquimula de la Sierra was formed, which included the totality of the present-day departments of Zacapa and Chiquimula, as well as the largest part of the present-day departments of El Progreso, Jalapa and Jutiapa.
Chiquimula has a great number of attractions, but the seven of greatest tradition are Volcán and Laguna de Ipala, Volcán Quezaltepeque, Poza de la Pila, the spa on the Río Jocotán, La Piedra de los Compadres, Cerro de Montecristo and Ruta Histórica del Peregrino.

Twenty four insects were collected in a chicken coop in Las Palmas, Olopa, department of Chiquimula; 13 were the first generation from a laboratory culture, with domiciliary parents collected in San Cristobal, Villa Canales, department of Guatemala.
The remaining 10 bugs were collected in the department of Quiche, one of them was found in a cave (municipality of Sacapulas) and the rest are from a chicken coop (municipality of Canilla).
This is the first report of the presence of this species in the departments of Huehuetenango, Jutiapa, Quiche and Santa Rosa.

Assessments conducted by USAID in several municipalities in the Department of Chinandega confirmed that people in the area had very little food, the grain storage facilities were empty, and there had been a near total crop loss in the spring planting cycle.
The dry conditions have severely affected Chiquimula Department, especially its two eastern municipalities of Camotán and Jocotán, which also rely heavily on seasonal migration to coffee and sugar areas to provide for family food needs.
The problem is concentrated in the poorer areas of the country such as El Quiche, Huehuetenango, Chiquimula, and San Marcos whose large poor and indigenous populations rely on seasonal migration to coffee areas for income.
