FHI - Findings: Chirundu, Zambia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-14)
Chirundu is believed to have one of the highest HIV prevalence levels in Zambia.
Chirundu, Zambia, is very different from Chirundu, Zimbabwe, largely because of its proximity to Lusaka and the commercial and subsistence farms that surround it.
While truckers are clearly central to HIV transmission in Chirundu, Zambia, there may also be a need to address commercial and subsistence agricultural workers near the town, particularly given the highly seasonal and thus migratory nature of their employment.

 PSI: News
CHIRUNDU, Zambia, July 24, 2002 β€” Fans of the Wild West would be forgiven for thinking that they had entered a modern-day frontier trading post when arriving at Chirundu, in southern Zambia on the border with Zimbabwe.
Chirundu is a very good example of how HIV is spreading rapidly throughout the country and how the Society for Family Health (SFH), PSI's affiliate in Zambia, is working to stop it.

 Chirundu
Chimba Chirundu, ex-schoolmaster and now Minister of Transport and Public Works in a newly-independent African country, is brought to trial on a charge of bigamy laid by his wife Tirenje.
Arrogant and power-hungry, wilful and morally ambiguous, Chirundu has to grapple with two sets of values: those of the traditional way of life in Africa, and those imposed by his country's erstwhile colonial rulers.
A chorus of other voices illuminate this powerful story of corruption and conflict: Tirenje, Chirundu's country wife, whose moral strength derives from her rural roots; the worldly Monde, his town wife; Moyo, his idealistic nephew and the leader of a strike by transport workers; and the cynical Pitso and Letanka, jailed South African refugees.

The areas under threat by the proposed Chirundu Project, constitute a total of 6,766 square kilometres and embrace the Miombo woodland/savannah bio-geographical provinces, all fronted on the lower Zambezi River and contains the last remaining natural stretch of the Middle Zambezi.
It is furthermore unlikely, that any agreement between the projects developer’s and Zimbabwe’s water-management authorities has been conducted transparently, as this forms an integral component of the non-existent Environmental Impact Assessment, which the Department of Natural Resources has not received nor has it invited a proposal for one.
The Second Phase of this communiqué will reveal to the ZCDF in the very near future, further detailed information pertaining to the Chirundu Project’s exact surveyed areas of proposed development, as well as the identities of the principle developers and an array of suppliers.
