In early times the caves were separated into three compartments referred to as the Saxon, Druid and Roman sections depending on when they were formed until Dr William Nicholls connected the three areas via passageways in 1903.
It was in 1941 that the baby girl, named Cavena, was born and subsequently baptised in the caves' make-shift church, dubbed the Cathedral of Rocks and consecrated at the time by the Bishop of Rochester.
Sacrificial rituals were also said to be regularly performed on children at one of the cave's Druid altars, and it is believed a priest who went down the caves in search of penance died of fright.

They get their name from the time when the Emperor Napoleon III used to live in part of Chislehurst, and he used part of the caves as a storehouse for some of his possessions.
In fact when this part of the cave was excavated a few years ago some of his possessions were found hidden in a section of passageway behind that door just there.......
Now the chamber itself is reputed to be haunted by the ghost of a woman who was murdered in the caves about 180 years ago, and according to modern day spiritualists her ghost still walks and haunts this passageway.

The caves are not caves in the Cheddar/ Wookey hole manner, they are man made flint workings in the chalk deposits common in this area of south-east London/north-west Kent.
In latter years the caves were used as a mushroom farm (the present owners are Kent Mushrooms Ltd but farming is no longer carried on there), ammunition store and in the second world war, one of the country's biggest air raid shelters, at times holding up to 15 000 souls.
The caves are situated almost in the centre of Chislehurst and are best reached by train to Chislehurst from Charing X. They are only a short walk from the station.

If you enjoy walking, then Chislehurst is on one of the Green Chain Routes from Mottingham Lane to Beckenham Park (4 1/2 miles) The Crown is very close to the well known Chislehurst Caves which extend for nearly 20 miles and date back over 4,000 years.
It was so well organised that people could pay 1d per night for a bunk and there was also a cinema, church and hospital for them to use during their time underground.
The caves are thought to be entirely man made and were created during three periods of time by our ancestors - Well worth a visit.
