Skrewdriver - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Performing largely for a skinhead audience, the band released a number of records on the Chiswick label.
Although the original band had a reputation for attracting violence at their gigs (Bob Geldof was reportedly knocked unconscious at one Skrewdriver gig), they did not openly support any political party.
They also released records on Rock-O-Rama Records, a label that is known for its far right sympathies, and were instrumental in setting up Blood and Honour, a network of bands promoting White Nationalist ideas through music and gigs.

 Chiswick Records
When you think of Chiswick records two things probably come to mind 1) Home of the mark 3 Damned during their excellent Machine Gun Etiquette phase and the home of the infamous Skrewdriver.
However a closer inspection into their history will reveal a record company that helped start the birth of small labels, gave a number of non London bands their first chance and competed with the big boys striking gold with The Damned.
Furthermore the history of the Sex Pistols and punk in general frequently crossed paths with Chiswick and its founders Roger Armstrong and Ted Carroll in many strange ways.

I think that up to then everyone had assumed that making and pressing a record required a lot of money, whereas the truth has always been that promoting a record into the charts is the thing that costs money.
The record had to have some appeal to some section of the populace or the act had to have a genuine following.
Partly we didn’t have a clue about the kind of records that were becoming hits and partly the introduction of the video seemed to really up the cost of hyping to beyond a joke.

I think the only record to officially bridge the gap between the ‘NS’ and ‘CHIS’ prefix’s was The Bishops “I Want Candy” but there may be test pressings of others.
Another record that may have over-lapped was the Jook EP (SW-30), early copies had a PS, later ones the same label/company sleeves as the Disguise 7″.
I was positive the Jook 7″ had the new style labels but I’ve since seen a copy in a red/white Chiswick bag with ‘map’ labels, so it’s probably safe to say I was wrong and that all copies had ‘map’ labels.

It marked the turning point in the band's direction from punk to skinhead, mirrored in the song "We Don't Pose", which was aimed at emerging young punk bands more concerned about image than the message.

Why they repressed 200 more in 1980 is something of a mystery to me. The recording quality is uniformly poor, and even on powerful songs like Control (easily one of their best, and the version on Disconcerted is one of my favorite Nurses songs) it's a struggle to hear what's going on underneath the murk.
His recollection was that they had like three hours and everything they recorded, which was like five or six songs, they did in thirty-five minutes, one straight run-through, because it took them that long to get there and get their equipment set up.

The third Soho release 'Gabrielle' (CHIS 119) was picked up by Chiswick and came out as The Nips, since serious radio play was unlikely as The Nipple Erectors.

Chiswick asked us to come down and do a session in a studio, and we got a single deal out of that, and then once we done that single they updated the deal to two singles and an LP.
And then, what turned out to be the main event, but got called off, but we maganed to squeeze about six or seven hundred people in a two hundred seated pub, now that was a good gig basically due to the satisfaction of getting something on, despite the fact that everything was stacked against us.
Then we were rehearsing at a pub at dinner times, and people used to come in on their dinner break to watch, so the police spoke to the governor of the pub and said that they are allowed to rehearse but they must shut the doors because no-one is allowed to listen to them.
