The name of the river comes for the abundant copper deposits along the upper river that were used by Alaska Native population and then later by settlers from the Russian Empire and the United States.
The construction of the Copper River and Northwestern Railway from Cordova through the upper river valley in 1908-1911 allowed widespread extraction of the mineral resources, in particular from the Kennecott Mine, discovered in 1898.
The Copper River Delta, which extends for 700,000 acres (2,800 km²) is the considered the largest contiguous wetlands along the Pacific coast of North America.

The area sampled was a slow eddy formed at the end of a cobble and gravel bar formed on river right on the inside of a bend near the transition to a strong left bend in the river.

At the confluence, the Copper River is actually smaller than the Chitina River which is considered its tributary.
Where it empties into the Nizina, the Kennicott River is in an erosional canyon over 350 feet deep; ten miles further downstream the Nizina is entrenched over 600 feet where it joins the Chitina River.

Our river companion for ten days was the Chitina River with our put-in and take-out spots noted on this map.
While this map does not show all rivers, the Chitina valley is clearly shown as the swath of green between the Wrangell Mountain range to the north and the coastal Chugach Mountain range to the south.
Essentially the start of the river was recent ice melt from the glacier.

It's hard to see, but the two rivers had distinctly different colors (different sediment loads), so the place where the rivers merged was really neat looking.
We are now on the Chitina River, where we'll be for most of the remainder of the trip.
This strip of land next to the river was also littered with wild raspberries, which easily explains the presence of bears.

Last year they would have had to purchase a Chitina permit for $10 and two fishing licenses for $15 each, a total expenditure of $40.
A portion of the fees will also go to the private land owners along the Chitina River, as compensation for the public access they provide across their land to the fishery.
In light of the change of Chitina to a subsistence fishery, SB 301 changes the name of the permit from "Chitina personal use salmon dip net fishing permit" to "Chitina dip net permit." Because the Fish Board changed the designation of the fishery, the term "personal use" needed to be removed from the permit title.

The next morning, we drove across the Copper River on a bridge near the town of Chitina (1 pic).
Anyway, the road parallels the Chitina River (1 pic), a tributary of the Copper, but you can't really see it from the road except at the beginning.

I'd been down on the Copper River delta a few weeks ago when I was at Cordova.
From there up to Chitina there is no road, no railroad for about seventy-five miles along the Copper River -- only a foot trail.
When they closed the railroad, the right-of-way was used for a road going east up the Chitina River.
