Chiwaukum is a Native American word meaning “place where many streams come together.” Knowing this, I guess I had better bring together my many streams of consciousness and coagulate my thoughts into a coherent page.
The Chiwaukum Mountains are a large sub-range north of the higher and more rugged Stuart Range.
The entirety of the divide and its lesser sub-divides to the east (such as McCue Ridge) drain to the Wenatchee River thence to the Columbia River.

The Chelan Mountains terrane is dominated by the Chelan Complex of Hopson and Mattinson (1971) which is composed of migmatite and gneissic to tonalite of deep-seated igneous and metamorphic (Waters, 1938; Hopson, 1955; Hopson and Mattinson, 1971).
The predominant rocks in the Chiwaukum Schist are garnet and staurolite- bearing graphite-biotite-quartz schist and subordinate muscovite paragneiss, siliceous hornblende schist, amphibolite, calc-silicate schist, and marble.
Poikiloblastic mica schist-Along the northern margin of the Chiwaukum Schist from Chiwawa Ridge to Mount David [2] is the poikiloblastic mica schist unit characterized by considerable chlorite, muscovite, and microscopic albite poikiloblasts.

 Chiwaukum Summary - A & A Backpacking
When we were up there {end of June} the snow melt and wet conditions made for excellent mosquito breeding grounds.There were several campsites here but i would definitely not reccommend it due to the wet ground and hourds of mosquitos.
First is the Glacier Creek cutoff which continues south to a horsecamp and now the trail west is horse free.There are two creek crossings one with a bridge and the other with the bridge neatly piled up on the other side.
Chiwaukum Lake is a great place to camp but as tempting as a swim may be, I would definetly advise against it.Personal experience.

 Chiwaukum Summary - A & A Backpacking

A better idea would be to camp at Chiwaukum Lake and day hike to Larch And Cup Lakes....A total of five miles and 600ft elevation gain that can easily be hiked in a couple hrs.

The Leavenworth, Washington area is composed of the Nason terrane, the Ingalls terrane, the Chiwaukum Graben, the Chumstick Formation, the Swauk Formation, and theTeanaway basalt.
The Ingalls terrane is thought to be Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous in age and was thrust onto the North American continent before the intrusion of the Mt. Stuart batholith in the Late Cretaceous (Tabor, et al, 1975).
The Leavenworth Fault on the west and the Entiat Fault on the east border the Chiwaukum Graben.

The Olympic Mountains as a whole have the appearance of an anticline that is plunging to the northeast.

 Chiwaukum Creek Snowshoe
From the parking area, hike the Chiwaukum Creek Road for about a half mile to the trailhead.
Chiwaukum is the native Wenatchee word meaning "many little creeks running into one big one." This is an apt definition as there are a number of tributaries in this area that all flow into the Wenatchee River.
From Stevens Pass, travel Highway 2 East for 25.1 miles and go right on Chiwaukum Creek Road #7908 (if you reach the Tumwater Campground you've gone too far - turn around and go back about one mile).

The rocks are now mostly mica schist, hornblende-mica schist, and amphibolite, and have been called the Chiwaukum Schist after exposures in the Chiwaukum Mountains, southeast of Stevens Pass (south of the area covered by this site).
Large tracts of the Nason terrane are gneisses derived from the Chiwaukum Schist and metamorphosed granitic materials.
Geologists do not know for sure the age of the original fan deposits that make up the Nason terrane, but some evidence indicates that the fans were deposited about 210 million years ago (Triassic).

Nestled at 5,210 feet (1) to the east of the Chiwaukum Mountains in the northeast corner of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness of the Wenatchee National Forest, this alpine lake may be reached via Trail #1571 or #1574.
The WDFW reports rainbow and cutthroat also (2); yet none of the fishermen I spoke to had caught any and nor did I: it is very possible they have been overrun by the brookies (which average 8 inches).
A word of caution: reaching Chiwaukum requires a 3,000-foot elevation gain, and many of the surrounding lakes are “cross-country” access only.

 NWsource: Travel: Scottish Lakes cabins open the door to superb backcountry snow trails
Though it was foggy, wands (3- to 4-foot-long bamboo garden stakes with flags attached) made it easy to follow the route to this large lake in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, one of many gems nestled in the Chiwaukum mountains.
We were surprised to find that the loggers in the area work through the winter, apparently because of fire hazards in the dry summer months.
McCue Ridge is scenic with rock outcroppings and trees etched with rime as the trail parallels the National Forest boundary.

Where I’m talking about is Scottish Lakes High Camp in the Chiwaukum Mountains.
The only access is via an 8-mile private road, using 4-wheel drive vehicles in the fall and snowcats and snowmobiles during the winter.
Of course, skiers who wish to ride down the mountain in one of their snowcats always have that option.
