Chloroflexi -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The Chloroflexi are a group of ((microbiology) single-celled or noncellular spherical or spiral or rod-shaped organisms lacking chlorophyll that reproduce by fission; important as pathogens and for biochemical properties; taxonomy is difficult; often considered plants) bacteria that produce energy through (Synthesis of compounds with the aid of radiant energy (especially in plants)) photosynthesis.
Chloroflexi are typically filamentous, and can move about through (Click link for more info and facts about bacterial gliding) bacterial gliding.
They are facultatively (Click link for more info and facts about aerobic) aerobic, but do not produce oxygen during photosynthesis, and have a different method of carbon fixation than other photosynthetic bacteria.

Chloroflexi have been implicated in BNR systems by phylogenetic identification of filamentous bacteria isolated by micromanipulation from sludge and culture-independent molecular phylogenetic surveys.
Filamentous bacteria responding to a subdivision 1 Chloroflexi probe were rare in the samples, whereas subdivision 3 Chloroflexi filaments were very common in some sludges.
It is suggested that filamentous bacteria belonging to the Chloroflexi phylum account for a large fraction of phylogenetically uncharacterized filaments in BNR systems and are likely to be abundant in such systems on a global scale.

Two hypotheses were tested and ultimately supported during this period: (1) That red filamentous bacteria are a new member of the Chloroflexi phylum, and (2) that these new Chloroflexi bacteria are more widely distributed in Yellowstone than previously thought.
Second, that red Chloroflexi are present in and dispersed by geothermal spring water.
