This unity came to a quick end in 561 when Chlothar I died, leaving the kingdom divided among his 4 sons who repeated the pattern by trying to kill each other.
Chilperic's succesor was Chlothar II who may or may not have been Chilperic's son, since his mother, Fredegund, was known to avoid marital fidelity, probably reasoning that what was good for the Merovingian gander was equally good for the goose.
Chlothar's son, Dagobert I, is considered to be the last effective Merovingian king.

Under pressure from the nobility, Chlothar was forced to concede to their demand that in future he only select his counts from the leading noble families residing in that province.
Despite canons requiring the free election of bishops, Chlothar was able to ensure that in future bishops would only be chosen from the members of his own court.
So while Chlothar was forced to grant greater autonomy to the nobles, he ensured close cooperation between the church and the crown.

Wars and Warriors in Gregory of Tours
In the end, Chlothar is forced to the proper conclusion of war and makes peace with the Saxons[51].
This last account is reminiscent of the view later expressed by Sedulius Scottus, who “contrasted the good prince who sought peace even for his enemies and only went to war for a necessary and just cause with the wicked prince who continued to fight after refusing an offer of peace”[58].
Thus, Theuderic attains victory in his just war against the Thuringians[70], and, in a reversal of their defeat of Chlothar, the Saxons lose in battle against the Swabians after thrice rejecting increasingly abject offers of submission, enabling the latter to obtain victory in a just cause[71].

Lack of brothers means less chance civil war, esp, if father strong enough to have ruled unite kingdom — leads us to believe, like Theudebert, effective war leader especially necessary is brothers fighting it out.
