 Chocolat - Movie Review
A fanciful fairy tale for grown-ups, "Chocolat" takes place in a sleepy French village, circa 1959, and stars Juliette Binoche as a nomadic confectioner of sublime candy delicacies whose arrival -- just as Lent has begun -- stirs curiosity, gossip and scornful disdain among the locals.
Halstrom infuses "Chocolat" with an esoterically poetic quality, but there's a smugness in the way he directs the story, as if he's looking down on the townspeople as a mostly fatuous lot that needs a free spirit like Binoche to loosen their shackles of tradition.
And his character is indicative of the movie's larger problem: It's full of capricious clichés that are overcome only by the film's more splendid performances.

Chocolat: A Ransom Movie Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The scenes in which Vianne stirs her chocolates on the stove are filmed with a delicious sensuality, and the feast given in Armande’s honor near the end of the film is warmly human and deeply inviting.
Or as Roger Ebert put it in his review: “Chocolat is about a war between the forces of paganism and Christianity, and because the pagan heroine has chocolate on her side, she wins.” By the end of the film, however, tolerance is achieved.
Chocolat is also a challenge to those of us who are committed to the gospel of Christ, that our faith would be winsome and joyfully welcoming, without compromise and full of grace.

Chocolat except a few of its stars, the type of movie I thought it was and what I wanted to get out of it.
The movie is idealistic in many ways, a fairy tale as I said, but so pleasantly and innocently that you cannot help but forgive its almost childlike idealism and positivity.
The movie is a celebration of life, humanity and passion, and while many other movies have been made on this theme, this one seems to capture them in a very unique and wonderful way.

 JoBlo reviews the movie "Chocolat"
In the end, the movie was simple enough for me to enjoy for the most part, thanks to all of the interesting actors in the film and the cute premise, but it truly does outlast its stay and doesn't really have all that much to say when you think about it afterwards.
But then the movie is really great and interesting coz it reflects values and in a way helps people to open their eyes to reality.
This movie may soothe the senses of non-church going liberals that like to believe their self-indulgence and "tolerance" is most noble, but it is as wrong as the candy-coated message would be to anyone searching for real truth.

Though the fate of each of Chocolat's characters is apparent almost from their first appearance, watching their emotional progress throughout the film is enjoyable enough to counteract their predictability.

However, all of these otherwise adept actors must deliver their lines in French-accented English, which comes off as a chintzy device to remind the audience that, hey, the movie’s set in France -- and perhaps also to explain the lack of an "e" at the end of the title.
Of course, things all wrap up rather neatly in the end, something that becomes very apparent less than halfway into the film, and there’s even a Disney-esque treat to close the picture that’s sure to incite a few groans.
Of course, Chocolat will be ideal fare for the Oprah’s Book Club crowd, and will surely be a great pick for seeing with mom over the holidays or maybe a cute first date.

Movie Review | Chocolat (2000) Juliette Binoche
It's a fine little movie, perhaps a little too sweet on top (pun intended), but all in all, it is a well-filmed, well-directed, and finely acted piece of fluff entertainment.
Juliette Binoche is just fine as the mother, a wandering spirit who, like her mother before her, has a need to go from town to town dispensing her own brand of cosmic sweets in the form of chocolates.
But because "Chocolat" was not intended as a serious drama, you really have no trouble predicting what will happen and how everyone will change by the end of the flick, including our wandering chocolate saleslady.

Miramax Films has its Oscar hopes on "Chocolat", director Lasse Hallstrom's follow-up to his Oscar-nominated "The Cider House Rules".

However, if you expect a truly magnificent film on the basis of its Oscar-pedigree cast and crew, then you might be disappointed by the rather tame approach that it takes.

 MovieThumbs.com - Chocolat (2001) movie review
According to the movie "Chocolat," it is. Oooooh, it is. "Chocolat" tells the story of a chocolate maker extraordinaire, Vianne (Juliette Binoche), who travels with her daughter, Anouk (Victoire Thivisol) wherever the North Wind takes her, enticing and arousing townspeople with her exotic flavours (we mean the chocolate, you dirty-minded naughties!).
It's a sophisticated (and mouth-watering!) demonstration of the phrase "Don't knock it till you've tried it." It also addresses several deep-rooted issues ranging from the constraints of religion to the oppression of women, from sexual repression to the sheer bliss of surrendering to caprice.
According to him, "The movie is charming and whimsical, and Binoche reigns as a serene and wise goddess." Go see it.
