 Palden Thondup Namgyal
At the age of six he became a student at St. Joseph's Convent in Kalimpong but had to terminate his studies due to attacks of malaria.
He served as adviser for internal affairs for his father, Sir Tashi Namgyal, the 11th Chogyal, and led the negotiating team which established Sikkim's relationship to India after independence in 1949.
After his father's death in 1963, Prince Palden was crowned the new Chogyal on an astrologically favorable date in 1965.

The doctors were detained by the Sikkim government, which led to a punitive British expedition against the Himalayan kingdom in which the whole of Darjeeling and Morang were annexed, in 1861, although the kingdom continued to exist as an independent rump state centered around the capital at Gangtok.
The Chogyal's mismanagement led to riots in 1970, which intensified in the face of election scandals in 1973.
The position of Chogyal was thus abolished, ending the monarchy.

The former Buddhist kingdom of Sikkim (Namgyal Chogyal Dynasty 1642-1975) is situated on the slopes of the Himalayas with the 8534 metre Kanchenjunga to the west, the Tibetan high plateau to the north and the kingdom of Bhutan to the east.
However, until 1975 Sikkim remained an autonomous Buddhist kingdom until it was annexed by India and became the 22nd state of India (this was not totally unwanted and even encouraged a little due to fear of the Chinese).

A joint Bhutanese-Tibetan force assisted the Chogyal to re-establish some degree of independence, until a mutiny by Bhutanese troops left him weakened and exposed.
The movement for the restoration of the Chogyal and the independence of Sikkim, remains a focus of much political activity within the country to this day.
