So for their performance of the St. Matthew Passion the choir of Kings College Cambridge and the Brandenburg Consort under conductor Stephen Cleobury use choral and orchestral forces of a size that would have been familiar to Handel and which Bach could only have dreamed off.
Many people will be attracted to this disc by the name of Kings College Choir and they will not be disappointed, even if the performances do not really make a first choice for the library shelves.

King's College Chapel took over a century to build and was completed in 1547, although the history of its construction is the subject of continuing research.
The object of the Chapel Foundation is to ensure that the Chapel and the Choir can continue to move forward, preserving and enhancing their outstanding reputations, and by so doing enable visitors, listeners and viewers from all over the world to delight in the architectural and musical glories of King's.
Services on Mondays are sung by King's Voices, a mixed voice choir which also performs in concerts and other events during the year.

Henry VI (1421-71) founded King's College in 1441, although the construction of the chapel he had planned took several decades to build and he did not live to see its completion.

The most famous is likely to be Kings College Chapel, Cambridge, with its splendid choir known the world over for it's Annual festival of Nine Lessons and Carols on Christmas Eve, broadcast around the world.
The old chapel of the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) at Addington Palace had Nicholas as it's patron and a Mass of St Nicholas was composed by Simon Lole of St Mary's, Warwick with it's fine choral tradition.

Born in Sutton Coldfield, Warwickshire in 1939, Jonathan Harvey was a chorister at St Michael's College, Tenbury (1948-52) and later a major music scholar at St John's College, Cambridge.
