Choisya (Starleaf or Mexican Orange) is a small genus of aromatic evergreen shrubs in the family Rutaceae, native to southern North America from the southwest United States (Arizona, New Mexico, Texas) and south through most of Mexico.
The leaves are opposite, leathery, glossy, palmately compound with 3-13 leaflets, each leaflet 3-8 cm long and 0.5-3.5 cm broad.
Choisya is a popular ornamental plant in areas with mild winters, grown for its strongly aromatic foliage and flowers.

No other plant can be marketed under the name Sundance, I believe, although a plant can have it as its cultivar name...
So, I can sell you "Sundance", which means Choisya ternata 'Lich', or I can sell you Magnolia 'Sundance' or Hosta 'Sundance' but I have to say Magnolia or Hosta when referring to the latter.

In September 2001, a sample of pot-grown Choisya ternata (family Rutaceae) obtained from a nursery in southern England, was received at the Central Science Laboratory.
The sample came from a stock where 10% of all plants were exhibiting abnormal stunting.
The reason why the virus was no longer detectable in leaves is unclear, but might be related to seasonal effects; the ELISA test was carried out in November, several months after the initial sap inoculation.

Choisya GOLDFINGERS ('Limo' PBR) is a new shrub registered under Plant Breeders Rights that has been bred by PLANTS subscriber Peter Moore who is Assistant Manager and Propagator at Longstock Park Nursery in Hampshire.
It's a cross between Choisya ternata SUNDANCE ('Lich' PBR) and Choisya arizonica which has taken ten years and thousands of seperate hand crosses and thousands of seedling evaluations before just one golden seedling was produced.
He was justly proud of his fine breeding work and hopes that it would be as succesful as his other Choisya, 'Aztec Pearl' which PLANTS celebrated with a nostalgic look back on its tenth anniversary (PLANTS Volume 5 Issue 1 Page 18).

Hi nutmeg, well now choisya ternata or (mexican orange blossom) do generally respond well to hard pruning; if this is carried out in Spring now when it is spring really depends on your geographical location, however i am sure you will know when spring is in you neck of the woods.
In general you can prune back flowered stems after flowering to encourage a second late flowering, however the pruning you wish to do should be carried out as follows any old, misshapen, or top heavy wood should be cut right back and you will get lovely new wood with flowers later on.
I have a large old choisya which has been hacked into many times and just keeps growing!

A well-known cultivar 'Sundance' has leaves which are gold to lime green.
The species has hybridised with Choisya arizonica to give Choisya 'Aztec Pearl', a popular modern cultivar, which has leaves divided into much more slender leaflets, and flowers which are pink in bud, opening white.
The genus was named after Jaques Denis Choisy, 1799-1859, a Swiss botanist and Professor of Philosophy at Geneva.
