Chojun Sensei would sometimes grunt humorously at An'ichi and tell him that teaching him privately was much more tiring than teaching the classes at the Academy, explaining that at the Academy he would teach a group class and all he would do is count.
Chojun Miyagi's teacher, Kanryo Higaonna, had devoted his entire life to the research, study, practice, and teaching of Naha-te, entrusting the passage and survival of the art to his most cherished student, Chojun Miyagi.
In addition to the training, Chojun Sensei would request certain "chores" of him, such as having him move large, heavy stones from one side of the yard to the other, and when he had finished, he would be requested to move them back to their original position.

Born Matsu Miyagi on April 25, 1888, at Higashi Machi, Hana, the son of Chosho Miyagi came to inherit the fortune of one of the wealthiest families on Okinawa ("Miyagi" is the Japanese derivative of the Okinawan name "Miyagusuku").
Miyagi was adopted at the age of five by an uncle after the death of the main successor to the family, and his first name was changed to Chojun, as he became heir to the family fortune.
