Cholame is just down the road from Parkfield, a city that bills itself as the "Earthquake Capital of the World" because of some 20 years of attention from seismologists, who have heavily instrumented the fault that cuts through the city in order to understand what triggers earthquakes.
Cholame also is thought to be the origin of the last big quake to hit southern California, the magnitude 8 Fort Tejon quake of 1857, when the San Andreas ruptured south from Cholame for about 200 miles.

Their forecast assumed (1) the slip was 3–4 m in 1857 and characteristic of the segment; (2) a slip rate of 3.4 cm/yr; and (3) full strain release in earthquakes.
Data are too sparse and ambiguous to resolve details of the 1857 slip for this segment but it is distinctly less than the 9 m of the Carrizo Plain and more than the 3–4 m previously estimated.
Although the probability of an M ≥7 Cholame event seems less than that suggested by a 3.5-m characteristic earthquake model, it remains among the highest in the state.

To evaluate seismic hazard in California, it is essential to understand the behavior and earthquake potential of the San Andreas fault.
Despite the tectonic complexity of southern California and the large number of active faults, the San Andreas fault dominates seismic hazard assessments because of its high moment release rate and documented historic and prehistoric frequency of generating large magnitude earthquakes (1).
