The first list they received, known jokingly among U.S. diplomats as "The Cholon Telephone Directory," was seen as evidence of how strong the new government's desire was to see the back of the ethnic Chinese.
Some were too poor to buy their way onto a boat for a passage which had to be paid for in gold.

The VC and NVA were at their best when they held the initiative, moving through advantageous terrain as light infantry, attacking small American units and perhaps pinning them down, at least until American firepower support came into play.
But in Cholon, the Communists were cornered and basically at the mercy of the Americans.
It was even thought-erroneously, as it turned out-that the unit had killed the VC commanding general in addition to destroying his command post.

I soon learned from a friend on the 3rd floor that one of the guys was being transferred to Phu Bai so I put dibs on the bed and pretty soon I moved to a 3rd floor inside room.
Lots of youthful days and nights in Cholon and Saigon like at the President hotel on top of the roof with the pool getting drunk with guys and the coes or girls, watching the helicopters shooting tracers down in a fire fight while we partied.

Ethnic Chinese "were told it would be very difficult for them to live under the new regime," said one trader in Cholon.
