Chongak: the name I gave to an orange and white cat with half a tail, one blind eye, a dirty, scruffy face and a loud, yearning meow that called out to anyone who would listen for a little kindness, a few minutes of attention and a scrap of food.
Well, as you know Chongak came back to my house that night and I let him in, fed him a delicious meal, brushed him for 20 minutes and let him sleep under my bed on the warm floor for an hour before he meowed to be let out.
I was walking back to my apartment from my hagwon and saw his dead body in the road, a flat fl spot with orange and white fur and the outline of a stumpy tail.

By far the most extant form of Korean court music today, hyangak includes a sort of oboe called a piri and various kinds of stringed instruments.
Originally designed for upper-class rulers, to be enjoyed informally, chongak is often entirely instrumental, usually an ensemble playing one of nine suites that are collectively called Yongsan hoesang.
Vocals are mainly sung in a style called kagok, which is for mixed male and female singers and is accompanied by a variety of instruments.

Korean music is distinctive, in spite of influence from China or Japan.
The two main forms are the stately ‘chongak’ and the folksier ‘minsogak’, and is characterised by abundant rhythms and melodic inventiveness.
Korean folk songs are sung both on their own and as part of a "p’ansori", a dramatic form usually for a single singer.

Since the ruling class were more cosmopolitan and educated in Chinese literature, chongak shows much more Chinese influence than sokak.
Finer distinctions can be made: the three genres of chongak listed above belong to the royal court, but members of the ruling class who operated outside the court itself had their own forms of music, such as the song form sijo (discussed in TB 37-40).
Most music of the ruling class is slow and dignified; in sijo (as in much Japanese noh music) the tempo is so slow that the placing of the beats becomes imprecise, in what Kang-sook Lee calls elastic rhythm (TB 37).
