Beginning on September 13, the one-month Chongming Forest Tourism Festival will kick off providing city and rural people alike with a chance to get close to nature.
It includes various activities held in the Dongping National Forest Park, the largest artificial forest park in east China, and the "Nongjiale" program that enables tourists to experience the rustic life of the local farmers.
"Chongming has the best ecological environment among the city's districts and county, so developing a tourist island is one of our goals," said Zhu Yilin, ChongmingCounty deputy director.
Chongming, China's third largest island, has great potential for its future development as it is still virgin land without much exploitation, ecology experts said at last week's China Urban Eco-construction Forum.
The forum, the first of its kind in China, was co-hosted by the China Ecology Association, Fudan University, the Shanghai Ecology Association and ChongmingCounty government.
By 2020, Chongming Island will be built into a garden island on the sea, with a nice ecological environment, scenic spots for entertainment and relaxation and environmentally-friendly industries, according to the county's blueprint.
