The population of the urban area of Chongqing proper was estimated at 3.4 million in 2004, ranking approximately as the 10th largest urban area of China.
Chongqing was the provisional capital of the government of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek during World War II (Second Chinese-Japanese War) and was heavily bombed by the Japanese Air Force.
For three years, Chongqing had been a sub-provincial city of Sichuan Province, until March 14, 1997, as decided in the Eighth National People's Congress, the original Chongqing City was merged with the neighbouring Fuling, Wanxian, and Qianjiang that had been governed by Chongqing City on behalf of the province since September of the previous year.

Chongqing city discharges 1,185 million tonnes of waste water into the Yangtze River each year - including 940 million tonnes of industrial waste water and 245 million tonnes of domestic sewage.
In 1999, Chongqing treated only 28 per cent of its industrial waste water and 8 per cent of its urban domestic sewage, which is significantly less than the national average for waste water treatment.
Once the dam is completed, the density of pollutants in the Yangtze near Chongqing is expected to increase by 34 per cent, and the area from Fuling to Wanshou, to increase by 57 per cent.

Wei Xingyan, a 28-year old Chongqing University graduate student, was arrested on May 11th along with a group of other students and teachers for hanging banners and balloons commemorating May 13th, the official anniversary of the introduction of Falun Dafa (also known as Falun Gong).
Wei was transferred to the Southwest Hospital in Chongqing City, her hospital room reportedly watched by plainclothes police from the “610 Office” (about).
A woman in the Chongqing University Graduate School office, who refused to provide her name, also claimed there was no student named Wei Xingyan enrolled in the school.

The Chongqing City First Intermediate Court recently sentenced five Falun Gong practitioners to prison terms ranging from five to 14 years for exposing on the Internet the rape of a female graduate student at Chongqing University by the police.
WOIPFG reported that after the Wei case was exposed on the Internet, Chongqing University denied the existence of the electrical engineering major Wei was pursuing.
On June 3, 2003, the Chongqing University Security Office and the Electrical Engineering Institute issued a joint announcement on the Chongqing University website, denying that there is a High-Voltage Direct Current Electricity Transfer major.
