Tu B'Shvat, The New Year for Trees - Torah.org   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Choni saw that although a tree could appear to be valueless and insignificant for such an extended period of time, it, in the long run, had value and was productive.
Choni vividly saw this lesson, as when he woke up after 70 years, he saw the grandchild of the planter eating the fruits of his grandfather's labor.
Choni learned that one's accomplishments are not necessarily valued for what they produce in the here and now.

 Yeshiva.org.il - Why was Choni's request answered?
Rashi (on Menachot 94b) explains that Choni drew a circle on the ground and refused to leave it, and therefore he was given the title "the circle-maker." He obstinately stood his ground until his demands were met.
Choni's distinction is made apparent by his supplication, and we also see it in the nature of his request, for he says, "Have mercy upon your children." He does not request through his own personal merit but asks for the solace of the entire Jewish people.
This, then, is the connection between Choni the Circle-maker and the month of Adar: on the twentieth of Adar it is forbidden to fast, for this is the day on which salvation was brought about, and God answered the prayers of Choni, causing rain to fall upon the land.

 A Jewish response to devastation?
When Choni's supplications to the Almighty went unanswered, he drew a circle in the dust and stepped inside of it, vowing not to leave the circle until G-d bestowed rain upon His people.
Choni called out to heaven: "I asked not for this, but for a rain to fill all the wells and cisterns." Immediately, raindrops larger than melons began to fall, wreaking destruction upon homes and fields.
Again Choni called out to heaven: "Neither did I ask for this, but for a rain of blessing." Immediately a normal rain began to fall, filling the wells and cisterns of the people as Choni had requested.
