The Voyage of Beagle - XIII. Chiloe And Chonos Islands
It is remarkable that the same plant should be found on the sterile mountains of central Chile, where a drop of rain does not fall for more than six months, and within the damp forests of these southern islands.
The zoology of these broken islets of the Chonos Archipelago is, as might have been expected, very poor.
In all parts of Chiloe and Chonos, two very strange birds occur, which are allied to, and replace, the Turco and Tapacolo of central Chile.

Chiloé - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Pacific ocean lies to the west, and the Chonos Archipelago lies to the south, across the Gulf of Corcovado.
The capital is Castro, on the east side of the island; the largest town (although not by much) is Ancud, at the island's northwest corner, and there are several smaller port towns on the east side of the island, such as Quellón, Dalcahue, and Chonchi.
Chiloé and the Chonos Archipelago are a southern extension of the Chilean coastal range, which runs north and south, parallel to the Pacific coast and the Andes Mountains.

November 10, The Beagle sailed from Valparaiso to the south, for the purpose of surveying the southern part of Chile, the island of Chiloe, and the broken land called the Chonos Archipelago, as far south as the Peninsula of Tres Montes.
In the central parts of the Chonos Archipelago (latitude 45 degrees), the forest has very much the same character with that along the whole west coast, for 600 miles southward to Cape Horn.
Here, within the Chonos Archipelago, the nature of the climate more closely approaches that of Tierra del Fuego than that of northern Chiloe; for every patch of level ground is covered by two species of plants (Astelia pumila and Donatia magellanica), which by their joint decay compose a thick bed of elastic peat.

Canoeists from the Magellan Strait and from the intricate labyrinth of the northern islands and of the infinite southern canals were neighbours (of) the Chonos (north) and (of) the Yamanas from the south.
There is no doubt that in this sense the Chonos (from the Las Guaitecas archipelago) were the most developed and it is highly probable that they thought their neighbours building techniques.
On the other hand, nature provided each group with different materials: a great variety of trees of smaller sizes to the south so that natives had to adapt the building of their vessels to the materials available.

Occupation of the channel islands by amerindians (Chonos, and Kawesqar), whose subsistence was based primarily on fishing and other coastal resource exploitation, appears to have occurred no earlier than about 5000 yr BP.
Amerindian impact on this environment was probably limited to the coastal margins, with occasional excursions to the interior of the islands of the Taitao-Chonos region, to collect wood and other plant resources.
