journal » Locating the Chopi Xylophone Ensembles of Southern Mozambique   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
This cultural attenuation occurred through the reduction of the male Chopi population via war, labor migration, and the deposition of chiefs who were the sole patrons of xylophone orchestras, and the disruption of traditional modes of transmission to ensuing generations (Mozambique 2004).
Music is transmitted orally amongst the Chopi, making the musical decline that occurred after independence among the Chopi that much more threatening to the existence of the tradition, as it was essentially not passed on to the next generation.
The Chopi timbila orchestra is one of many possible examples of xylophone practices in southern Africa, and has been researched relatively little considering the frequency of references to it in ethnomusicological literature.

Excerpt From Chapter 13 "The Music Trail"
For a time Chopi music was sustained in one or two of the Rand goldmines where policies towards African culture were sometimes surprisingly enlightened even in the days of apartheid; but when South Africa cut back on migrant labour, performances of all tribal dance groups were curtailed.
Chopi xylophones, and the beautiful marimbas of their cousins the Ndau (from where our word ‘marimba’ comes) have individual resonators like Javanese instruments.
They are played by the Chopi of Moçambique, and in the mountains of Basutoland: they are also played by Bushmen and Hottentots, suggesting that panpipes may have been around in southern Africa for a long time — possibly since before the Bantu migrated into the area.
