The Choptank River basin drains aproximately 700 square miles of land in Maryland, including portions of Caroline, Dorchester, Queen Anne’s and Talbot Counties in the middle of the Eastern Shore.
The Choptank River, along with all tributary basins in the Chesapeake, contribute to and are impacted by nutrient pollution.
In the Choptank watershed, agriculture is the primary land use and the leading source of nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment.

The Choptank River Fishing Piers are open 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.
The Talbot County side offers 25 acres of land extending upriver from the pier and there is a walking path along the Choptank River and Bolingbroke Creek.
The piers are the previous Choptank River Bridge over the Choptank between Talbot and Dorchester counties.

 Sea Kayak Tuckahoe and Choptank River
I was planning on one day of paddling in the lower Tuckahoe and the middle Choptank river.
Returning to the main river I kept close to the shore and headed into the wind that was now coming more from the west.
The preserve is reached by small boat from Kingston Landing, located about 2/3-mile upstream on the Choptank River.  Overland access is across private property and permitted only with prior permission of The Nature Conservancy.

Outside of the Patuxent River, I have spent more pleasant days at anchor in the creeks of the Choptank and touring its towns than any other region of the Chesapeake.
The only negative associated with the Choptank is that we sailors are limited to the area west of the fixed bridge at Cambridge.

Specific names of rivers, creeks, or points of land, which are not found on the segment plots, are on the quadrangle maps for that segment (Appendix B).
Specifically, the Gunpowder River segment had 89.25 hectares in 1994, a 92% increase over the amount in 1993 (46.60 hectares), although this was still 36.83 hectares less than the 1992 level of 126.08 hectares (Tables 6 and 7).
SAV was abundant in the mainstem Potomac River; in Chopawamsic, Aquia, Nanjemoy, Burgess and Goose creeks; and in the Port Tobacco River (Figure 23).

enton, the county seat of Caroline County, is located on the eastern bank of the Choptank River near the geographic center of the county and of Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
In the early 1770s, the settlement was called Eden-Town in honor of Sir Robert Eden, the last governor of the colony of Maryland under the Proprietary.
In 1811, a bridge built across the Choptank at Denton greatly improved transportation from the west, enhancing the town’s position as a trade center.

 Chesapeake Chapter, US Lighthouse Society - Our Lighthouse Heritage - Choptank River Light
The Choptank River Light was constructed in 1870 and was a hexagonal cottage style screw pile lighthouse built by Francis A. Gibbons.
The lighthouse sat at Bernoni Point in the Choptank River and replaced the Lightship Hooper Strait/Relief (LV 25) that was anchored there from 1870-1871.
Records show that in January 1918 this lighthouse structure was destroyed by ice flows that are said to have climbed 30 feet around the lighthouse and knocked it off the pilings.

This region of the Rappahannock River is interesting in that SAV populations (principally widgeongrass today, although eelgrass was abundant prior to 1972) continue to persist and is the only area in the entire Rappahannock River that supports SAV beds that have persisted for years.
Honga River, Barren Island, Tar Bay (flight lines 12-15) SAV more abundant at the Bishops Head area (quad 83), and patches noted from field observations inside the CBF breakwater at Bishop's Head are clearly visible; many beds mapped in 1998 in the Honga are denser and appear to have expanded (quads 73, 74).
Rappahannock River (flight lines 87 a,b,c,d, 88) (quads 110, 111, 116, 117, 118) As in the past few years, there is very little SAV in the lower river (mouth to Moratico).

 Middle Chesapeake Bay Fishing Reports
Personal observations seem to indicate that the croaker fishing in the Choptank has dropped off in the last week for some reason, but it continues to be very good in the main part of the middle bay.
Croakers have moved up the Choptank River to Cambridge and good fishing can be found along the channel edges in the evenings as long as a good tide is running.
The Choptank Fishing Pier reports that fishermen are catching a mix of white perch, catfish and croakers.
