The chorale cantata is a cantata which is a setting of a chorale text (or partly a paraphrase of one, as in many of the cantatas of Bach's second cycle, 1724-5), generally using the chorale melody in various ways.
An earlier type was the chorale motet, a vocal work often with instrumental doubling, where the chorale served as a cantus firmus in the 16th century and later served as a basis for fugal imitation.
The chorale fantasia is a more extended organ piece based on a chorale (the term has also been used for the elaborate opening choruses in Bach's chorale cantatas); the chorale fugue is an organ fugue based on a chorale melody; the chorale partita or chorale variations is a set of variations on a chorale melody.

 Clavier-Übung III
III--written for the grandest instrument of the keyboard family--the so-called "Organ Mass." Volume III is called the "organ mass" because it consists of a series of chorale preludes on texts pertaining to the Lutheran Mass and Catechism.
The many incidences of three's in the prelude and fugue--3 flats in the signature, 3x3 sections in the prelude, 3 subjects in the fugue in 3 proportional meters--are intended to invoke the name of the Holy Trinity.
This symbolism continues in the twenty-one intervening chorale preludes and four duets which have three functions in the Lutheran liturgy: the Mass, Catechism and Communion.

MUS 311 Counterpoint, Study Guide R
Chorale prelude--originated as an organ composition designed to be performed during the church service before or after the singing of the chorale.
Today the term is used in a general sense to refer to works that elaborate on a chorale, excluding straightforward harmonizations of chorale melodies.
The chorale melody is harmonized in four voices that are plentifully decorated with: passing tones, neighboring tones, suspensions, or other nonharmonic or harmonic tones.
