University of Miami School of Medicine - Glossary - Chorda tympani
Chorda tympani: A branch of the facial nerve (the seventh cranial nerve) that serves the taste buds in the front of the tongue, runs through the middle ear, and carries taste messages to the brain.
The chorda tympani is part of one of three cranial nerves that are involved in taste.
The chorda tympani appears to exert a particularly strong inhibitory influence on other taste nerves, as well as on pain fibers in the tongue.

IX. Neurology. 5g. The Facial Nerve. Gray, Henry. 1918. Anatomy of the Human Body.
The central branches leave the trunk of the facial nerve in the internal acoustic meatus, and form the sensory root; the peripheral branches are continued into the chorda tympani and greater superficial petrosal nerves.
Entering the brain at the lower border of the pons between the motor root and the acoustic nerve, the fibers of the sensory root pass into the substance of the medulla oblongata and end in the upper part of the terminal nucleus of the glossopharyngeal nerve and in the fasciculus solitarius.
Before uniting with the lingual nerve the chorda tympani is joined by a small branch from the otic ganglion.

chor´dae tendi´neae cor´dis [TA] the tendinous cords that connect each cusp of the two atrioventricular valves to appropriate papillary muscles in the heart ventricles.
The cords are of varying lengths and thicknesses and are frequently branched.
tym´pani [TA] a nerve originating from the facial nerve (nervus intermedius) and distributed to the submandibular, sublingual, and lingual glands and the anterior two-thirds of the tongue; modality: parasympathetic and special sensory.

When the TTX (10 mg/ml) was applied directly to the tongue surface for 3 minutes, magnitude of the integrated responses of the chorda tympani was diminished to about 60% of that of the control response.
wt.) was applied intravenously, magnitude of the responses of the chorda tympani to four basic taste stimuli decreased gradually to 20 approximately 30% of that of the control responses within 60 minutes and did not recover more than 10 hours.
This is assumed due to the blocking of the sodium pump of nerve fibers in the chorda tympani by the TTX.

Chorda tympani lies across the tympanic membrane, so it's possible that this nerve was injured by the pencil.
The chorda tympani is a branch of the facial nerve that is related to the lateral wall of the middle ear, near the tympanic membrane.
Although the chorda tympani, like the greater petrosal nerve, is a branch of the facial nerve, the chorda tympani never runs with the greater petrosal nerve.

Furthermore, the nerve-response to sodium-salt in the chorda tympani nerve, a primary taste nerve that connects the tongue and the brain, is different in adult rats that were raised on a low or high sodium diet.
To investigate whether there is a corresponding change in the way the nerve terminates in the brain (terminal field), graduate student Dave Pittman injected the chorda tympani nerve with a fluorescent dye.
The fluorescent dye is transported along the nerve to the terminal end in the rat's brain stem.

Taste Lecture - E. Pritchard, PhD
Taste experiences are reported to the brain via one of 3 nerves: the chorda tympani branch of the facial nerve (for the front part of the tongue), the glossopharyngeal nerve (for the back of the tounge) and the vagus nerve for deeper parts of the throat, larynx and pharynx.
However, the chorda tympani nerve passes by the ear drum, so anesthetic can be easily administered there with no complications to the tongue.
The chorda tympani not only is excitatory for taste sensations in the front part of the tongue, but it also inhibits the taste sensations in the glossopharyngeal nerve - for the back part of the tongue.

Tensor tympani: This muscle attaches to the upper part of the handle of the malleus and pulls the tympanic membrane inward when it vibrates, rendering the tympanic membrane more tense.
The chorda tympani contains fibers relaying taste sensation from the anterior 2/3 of the tongue, as well as preganglionic parasympathetic fibers destined to synapse in the submandibular ganglion.
In the intact specimen this recess houses of the malleus and incus.

The tympanic membrane (eardrum) separates the external ear (composed of the cartilaginous auricle and external auditory canal) from the middle ear.
The major components of the middle ear are the tympanic membrane, the bony ossicles, two muscle tendons (of the stapedius and tensor tympani muscles) and two nerves (the horizontal portion of the facial nerve and a branch of the facial nerve, the chorda tympani).
The chorda tympani (a branch of the facial nerve) crosses the medial surface of the malleus neck.

Currently we are studying the peripheral gustatory system in hamsters and rats with neurophysiological recordings from the chorda tympani and glossopharyngeal nerves, which gather information about taste stimuli subsequent to transduction and processing by taste receptor cells within the taste bud.
A rotation project would involve electrophysiological recording from the chorda tympani nerve in 2 groups of hamsters, those that had been exposed to cycloheximide and those that had not been exposed to cycloheximide.
A lab rotation would involve learning micro-neurosurgical techniques to isolate the chorda tympani nerve, electrophysiological techniques to obtain recordings, computerized analysis techniques to quantify the data, and statistical analysis to evaluate the significance of the data.

These preganglionic fibers travel to the submandibular ganglion via the chorda tympani nerve to innervate the submandibular and sublingual glands, and to the sphenopalatine ganglion via the greater superficial petrosal nerve to innervate the lacrimal, nasal, and palatine glands.
The terminal branch of the nervus intermedius, the chorda tympani, leaves the mastoid segment 5 mm proximal to the foramen and travels lateral to the incus, medial to the malleus to exit at the petrotympanic fissure.
In addition, in temporal bone fractures, the GSPN and chorda tympani nerves are very vulnerable to injury and may be disrupted with an intact facial nerve.
