Chorley is near to the city of Preston and the towns of Blackburn, Bolton, Leyland, Ormskirk and Wigan.
Chorley became incoroprated as a municipal borough in 1881.

As with most Northern towns, Chorley was expanding as a textile town with the boom of weaving mills, with its population rising massively from 4,516 in 1801 to 19,472 in 1881.
The Chorley Borough was recently enlarged in 1972 to contain Withnell and Adlington, bringing the combined population to 80,000 and now approaching 100,000.
Chorley is a relatively small, bustling Northern town, with a lively town centre, full of traditions and memories of past times.Chorley itself is quite a condensed area, but surrounding the town are some picturesque wide open spaces.

Situated on the road which leads from Southport to Chorley and verging on the main road from Preston to Liverpool, it is surrounded by pleasant, level farming country.

Chorley Borough Council's executive cabinet were approached by Lancashire Joint Primary Care Trust as part of the consultation exercise.
In their response, members of Chorley's executive cabinet suggested the borough be considered as a possible site for the proposed Central and West Lancashire facility.
Although councillors gave their general support to the proposals to improve the county's mental health services, they raised concerns at the projected timetable for the construction of the new facility in 2011 and the plan not to maintain funding for the crisis intervention team.

Chorley Borough Council has voted to go it alone if the region votes for a North West assembly.
Earlier, the authority had indicated it may submit a second option of a merger with South Ribble and Preston, but that was thrown out after councillors felt it did not reflect the feeling of people in the community.
He admitted that the indications were the Commission might not look favourably on the idea of Chorley becoming a unitary authority on its own, because of its size, but the council had agreed that was the option they had to go for.

The Chorley Guardian in Lancashire has been campaigning for Chorley Borough Council to produce a new map of the town, after finding that the existing one was more than a decade out of date.
The Chorley Guardian launched its campaign after Maguire was appointed editor in April, and found it impossible to obtain a map of Chorley for his newsroom's wall.
Maguire discovered that neighbouring South Ribble Borough Council distributes a free map, produced by a company that sells advertising to fund its production costs, but that Chorley Borough Council had last produced a similar map in 1995.
