Choro - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Choro, also called chorinho, is a Brazilian popular music style.
Originally choro was played by a trio of flute, guitar and cavaquinho (a small chordophone with four strings).
More recently, choro has attracted the attention of musicians in the United States, such as Mike Marshall, who have brought this kind of music to a new audience.

Choro Q stutters at the starting grid with its most obvious flaw, the game play just is not riveting.
Choro Q saves itself from the budget bin of mediocrity by giving gamers, who can look past all of its flaws, an experience like no other.

Choro is to bossa nova and samba as ragtime is to bebop and later forms of jazz, although it actually predates ragtime by a few decades.
The Choro Ensemble is alone in their rescue-and-recovery mission in New York, but there's a full-scale choro revival in Rio, where pubescent Cariocas with naval rings and tribal tattoos are reportedly bumping and grinding to Brazil's golden oldies.
Choro's exuberance makes it sound simple, but that's deceptive: Guitarist Gustavo Dantas manages contrapuntal complexity worthy of Bach and throws in some tricky chord substitutions to keep Israeli clarinetist Anat Cohen sharp in her improvisations.

 Choro: A Very Brief History
Choro is primarily an instrumental form, and to a North American ear might sound a little like a small Dixieland jazz combo playing with strange rhythms, extreme melodic leaps, unexpected modulations, and occasional breakneck tempos.
Choro Carioca, the most popular chorão of that decade, was an ensemble that initially consisted of flute, two guitars, and a cavaquinho.
By the turn of century, choro had developed into an independent genre with its own basic characteristics, although choros were still labeled according to the polkas, tangos, and other dances that provided the underlying rhythm.

 Brasileirinho
Choro is credited as being the first musical expression of Brazil's melting pot and had a prominent place in the development of Brazil's cultural identity.
Choro was born in the middle of the 19th century when the musicians in Rio started to mix European melodies and music styles like waltz and polka with Afro-Brazilian and native rhythms.
Choro was forgotten but it never died, it stayed alive through the musicians that kept playing it in "Rodas de Choro", jam sessions, at homes and bars.

Although choro began as a "Brazilianized" way of playing popular European dance music, with instrumentation that was typical of the time and region, it was soon transmuted into one of the most important and sophisticated genres of Brazilian music.
Choro was, in fact, being renewed and revitalized by Gnattali and others, although it would be some years before their efforts would become known to the general public.
Choro wasn't in the forefront of public attention, but it was a constant presence, and new developments were occurring.

BRAZZIL - News from Brazil - CHORO, CHORINHO - BRAZILIAN MUSIC
The whole process of choro development underwent a very sensitive deceleration in the mid-1950s, and by the beginning of the 1960s choro was almost completely forgotten by the public and the media.
Choro musicians are required to be not only proficient on their instruments but also to have an extended perception of "codes" and "passwords" which enable the players to combine their vision and technique to construct torrential improvisations.
Choro's survival today depends on its ability to conquer a space in the domestic and import CD market, the development, production, and promotion of artists, and the distribution of their work.

 What Is Choro Music?
Choro (pronounced SHOH-roh) is best described in American terms as "the New Orleans jazz of Brazil." It is a complex popular musical form based on improvisation, and like New Orleans jazz, blues, or ragtime, grew from a formalized musical structure and many worldly influences.
Choro was developed as an almost purely instrumental rather than vocal style because of the musicians' sheer love for playing.
Choro began to fall out of fashion in the mid-1950s, and by the '60s it was difficult to hear this music anywhere in Brazil.

The professionalization of choro in the 1930s and 1940s is explored through studio and radio groups called conjuntos regionais, and the role of choro within the nationalist project carried out by the government of Getúlio Vargas.
Choro as a musical and social phenomenon is the focus of investigation of the roda, or choro jam session, and the choro revival of the mid-1970s and 1980s.

Choro music developed towards the end of the 19th Century, at roughly the same time as samba.
Similar in tone and spirit to North American dixieland music, choro is also primarily instrumental, and features extensive improvisation, typically on piano, flute, saxophone and stringed instruments such as the guitar and bandolim.
A choro artist whose career took off well after the golden years of the genre, do Bandolim was a stellar performer; these recordings from the 1950s and '60s showcase him in a variety of styles -- at times jazzy, or poppish, or more traditional.

While the clarinet is not a typical instrument in some forms of Brazilian music it is common in the choro form and thus fits in well, contributing to the organic texture of the group, sharing solo and thematic duties with Marshall’s mandolin.
Much like Marshall’s previous album, Serenata: The Music of Hermeto Pascoal, Marshall has taken the subject matter and given it a smoother veneer, meaning that while this is clearly folk-based as is the traditional form, all the rough edges have been removed and the arrangements more precise.
