A franchise was awarded in 1891 for the construction of a horse tramway alongside the Lima Railways steam line from Lima to Chorrillos.

Chorrillos is a district of the Lima Province in Peru and part of the city of Lima.
The district was originally founded as San Pedro de los Chorrillos and served as a deluxe beach resort until the late 1800s, when it was almost completely destroyed by Chilean forces during the War of the Pacific.
The resulting town of San Pedro de los Chorrillos was officially established as the District of Chorrillos on January 2, 1857.

On December 21, Peruvian authorities transferred U.S. activist Lori Berenson from the Santa Mónica women’s prison in the Chorrillos district of Lima to Huacariz prison in the northern city of Cajamarca, which is 9,000 feet above sea level.
After being convicted of “treason” and sentenced to life in prison by a military court on January 11, 1996, Berenson was transferred to Yanamayo prison at 12,700 feet above sea level in the Andean city of Puno, where she suffered altitude-related health problems.
The civilian court convicted Berenson on June 20 of this year to lesser charges of involvement with the MRTA and sentenced her to 20 years in prison.

The name Barranco (cliff) is descriptive of its coastline, featuring a cliff overlooking a small sand strip (now flanked by a highway, Costa Verde Ave.) which runs from Miraflores to Chorrillos.
On Pedro de Osma Ave., some tracks from the former streetcar (originally a railroad between Chorrillos and Downtown Lima) can be seen.
It has a dry climate which is unique, compared to the other districts that have a more humid climate.

Pilar, a woman from one of Lima's numerous shantytowns was studying education at the "La Cantuta" national university and organizing religious base communities when she was brutally detained in 1992.
Pilar was tried the month after the first Emergency Executive Decree of this vast draconian legislation was instituted and hooded judges in a summary court procedure sentenced her based on "criteria of conscience," a judge's "belief of guilt" although there is no evidence.

 THE TRAMWAYS OF PERU
Both Lima Railways and Tranvía Eléctrico de Lima y Chorrillos, which had been running trolleys to Chorrillos since 1904, were unhappy with this development and the latter tried to sabotage the CNTE project.
Lima's four electric tramway operators - FC Urbano, the companies that ran interurban lines to Chorrillos and Callao, and Lima Railways which ran the line to Magdalena - all purchased power from Empresas Eléctricas de Santa Rosa, which also lit the lights of the city.
One of the provisions of the merger was that the Lima Railways steam lines no longer carry passengers to Chorrillos and Callao, that they not compete with the electric tram lines.
