Lu Hsün (1881-1936) was the pen name of Chou Shu-jen, a Chinese author and social critic.
Best known for his pioneering short stories in the modern style and his prolific output as a polemic and personal essayist, he was a prominent man of letters and cultural leader.
Chou Tso-jen, his younger brother also studying in Japan on a government scholarship, was then his literary collaborator; they translated two volumes of European short stories, mainly by Russian authors.

Chou Tun-i, given his Taoist connections, must certainly have had the Taoist usage in mind, but here he is giving the terms a clear Confucian meaning, stressing moral activity.
Given Chou Tun-i's Taoist connections, this is not an implausible thing for him to say, although it seems to trouble Chu Hsi.

The formative stages took place during the 6th to the 4th century BC, at the time of the Zhou (Chou) dynasty (1027?-256 BC).
During the first half of the 20th century Chinese writers used literature as a mirror to reflect the seamy side of life, as a weapon to combat the evils of society, and as a form of propaganda to spread the message of class struggle.
By using trenchant essays and stories to attack traditional society, writers such as Lu Xun, whose real name was Chou Shu-jen, helped advance the socialist revolution.

The early state of Chinese mythology was also molded by the religious situation that prevailed in China at least since the Chou conquest (12th century BC), when religious observance connected with the cult of the dominant deities was proclaimed a royal prerogative.
But its 305 songs are believed to range in date from the beginning of the Chou dynasty to the time of their compiling.
One cycle, for example, records the major stages in the rise of the Chou kingdom, from the supernatural birth of its remote founder to its conquest of the Shang kingdom.

Master Chou said, "In being authentic there is no acting; in incipience there is good and evil." This clarifies the unexpressed substance of the human mind/heart, and refers to the beginnings of its expressed phase.
[However, as in Chou's theory,] the movement from authentic activity to goodness is like a tree [growing] from root to trunk and from trunk to branch.
Chou Lien-hsi hsien-sheng ch'üan-chi was compiled by Chang Po-hsing (1652-1725) in 1708, and was included in his collection, Cheng-i t'ang ch'üan-shu (Library of Cheng-i Hall, published by Chang between 1707 and 1713).

Once the section headings of the T'ung-shu were discarded, the fact that within this section there originally were no such words as "order, nature, and endowment" made it impossible to understand.
Master Chou, in this chapter, seems to distinguish [between morality and literary expression], taking literary expression as an activity that requires effort.
Given Chou Tun-i's Taoist connections, this is not an implausible thing for him to say, although it seems to trouble Chu Hsi (see below).
