Chouan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chouans were insurrectionary royalists in France, in particular Brittany, during the French Revolution, and even for a time under the Empire (from 1793 to 1815), when their headquarters were in London.
Their names derive from their muster by night at the sound of the chat-huant, the screech owl, a nocturnal bird of prey with a distinctive cry.
They engaged in what would later be called guerrilla warfare.

 [No title]
As he reached the spot where he had left the Chouan, Marche-a-Terre, who had seen with apparent indifference the various movements of the commander, but who was now watching with extraordinary intelligence the two soldiers in the woods to the right, suddenly gave the shrill and piercing cry of the /chouette/, or screech-owl.
The Chouan at once sent his owl's-cry to an apparently vast distance, and before the men who guarded him could raise their muskets and take aim he had struck them a blow with his whip which felled them, and rushed away.
The girl was gratified at the evident power of the Chouan, and though by nature too simple and humble for the tricks of a lady's maid, she was also far too anxious to penetrate the mystery not to profit by her advantages on this occasion.

 The Spaniard
This was the public version of the tragic epilogue to those three mysteries, which had puzzled and terrified the countryside during the early days of October, 1809 -- the robbery of the mail-coach, the burglary in the Palace of Monseigneur the Constitutional Bishop of Alençon, and the murder of Mme.
He was furious with the Chouan and his obstinacy, and furious with that tiresome man in the grey coat who lorded it over every official in the district, and assumed an authority which he ought never to have been allowed to wield.
So the Chouan was taken back to the cells and the chief commissary of police was left free to make his arrangements for the night's expedition, without referring the matter to the accredited agent of His Majesty's Police.

 The Chouans - Part II
The Chouan paid no attention to the movements of the young officer, and continued to play with his whip, and fling out the lash of it as though he were fishing in the ditch.
He led Hulot to a place where the sand had been stirred as with a rake; then he took him to the opening of a wood-path, where the leaves were scattered and trampled into the earth,--unmistakable signs of the passage of a large body of men.
The words reached the ears of the young leader of the Chouans and his ferocious aide-de-camp, and the royalists made a hasty retrograde movement, checked, however, by a brutal shout from Marche-a-Terre.

Pale and weak, she flies; Her naked feet, torn by the brambles, bleed; She's all alone, and cries, "To help me, speed!" Jean Chouan mutters, "'T is Jeanne Madeleine." In line of shot, in middle of the plain, On her the bullets with fierce fury pour.
The Blues cried, "'T is the chief!" and that brave form, Engrossing all the thunder and storm, Made Death his target change.

 The Chouans - Part V
She would have liked to revenge herself on the spot, but was forced to smile, for she was determined at any cost, even that of insult, to discover the nature of the feelings that actuated the young girl; she therefore pretended not to have understood her.
She was looking fixedly at the still mirror of the little lake to the right when suddenly she heard a rustling among the rushes and saw in the moonlight the face of Marche-a-Terre rising behind the gnarled trunk of an old willow.
Attentive to all Francine's movements, the Chouan disappeared behind the willow, as he saw her turn to look for the enemy over whom she was keeping an instinctive watch.

It was close to Laval, on the little farm of the Poiriers, that the four Chouan brothers were born to Pierre Cottereau and Jeanne Moyné.
One of their ancestors, a misanthropical woodcutter, a morose peasant, kept himself aloof from the other peasants as the chat-huant (screech-owl) keeps aloof from the other birds; hence the name Chouan, a corruption of chat-huant.
It is not for us to relate the death and destruction of that heroic family, nor follow to the scaffold the two sisters and a brother, nor tell of battlefields where Jean and René, martyrs to their faith, lay dying or dead.

He heard Lefèvre's call outside and the heavy tramp of the men.

The Tanned Human Skin of Nantes - Sophie Masson - Quadrant Magazine
When I first read of this case, in the course of reading about various other aspects of Vendée and Chouan history, it astounded me. For a start, it seemed almost unbelievable that it should be deemed appropriate to exhibit the pitiful remains of someone whose descendants might still be living in Nantes.
It was the first great defeat for the hitherto stunningly successful Vendéen rebel army under the charismatic peasant leader Jacques Cathelineau (who was killed two weeks later), in front of the walls of Nantes, which was one of the few bastions of Republicanism in the west of France.
I leave it to my readers to determine to their satisfaction which of the two is more likely.
