One indicator of the Chow Chow's development as a vegetarian is the difference in the mouth, jaw, and tooth structure from those breeds that developed as "meat eaters." For example, the Chow has a set of teeth that are flatter than the sharp incisors found in the carnivorous breeds.
The Chow has two other distinctive physical features that are unique to this breed of dog; first, a blue-fl tongue, and second, a lack of angulation in the lower joint of the hindlimbs.

Chow Chow, or Chow, is a breed of dog originating from China, where it is referred to as Songshi Quan (鬆獅犬 Pinyin: sōngshī quǎn), which literally means "puffy-lion dog." The breed has also been called the Tang Quan, "Dog of the Tang Empire."
Chows are distinguished by their unusual blue-fl/purple tongue and very straight hind legs, resulting in a rather stilted gait.
Recent DNA analysis confirms that this is one of the oldest breeds of dog that probably originated in Siberia or Mongolia, used as temple guards.
