John Norfleet was a successful planter in Nansemond County, Virginia; he was a Justice of the Peace for Nansemond County and a member of the Vestry for the Upper Parish of Nansemond for a number of years.
This northeastern North Carolina land was very near the plantation of his first cousin, Marmaduke Norfleet (1700-1774) and Buckland Plantation, belonging to William Baker and Judith Norfleet Baker (daughter of Marmaduke Norfleet).
Also, Abraham was a grandson of John Norfleet (1699-1753) of Chowan County, North Carolina, hence the connection of the farm with the original owner of the Bible record.

Laban Stafford is found in the records of Caswell County North Carolina several times; 1777 listed as a taxpayer, 1779 having bought 682 acres on North Hico Creek and 550 acres on Cobbs Creek, and 1803 paying taxes again.
In the 1820 census Laban Stafford had 13 children, a son and a daughter under 10, 2 sons between 18 and 26, 5 daughters between 10 and 16, 3 daughters be tween 16 and 26, and 1 daughter between 26 and 45 years of age.

Chowan was formed in 1670 as a precinct in Albemarle County of the Carolina Colony, and was originally called Shaftsbury Precinct.
The Precinct's original territory included all the land (inhabitable) west of the Chowan River, as well as the northern half of the peninsula south of the Albemarle Sound and north of the Pamlico Sound.
In 1720, the Town on Queen Anne's Creek was renamed Edenton, for Governor Charles Eden, and became the county seat in 1722.

mi.  The first governor of the County was appointed in October,1664, and it soon also had a legislature and courts.  By 1668 it wasdivided into Chowan, Currituck, Pasquotank, and Perquimans precincts.
The County ceased to exist as a unit of government in Carolina in 1689 when Governor Seth Sothel departed.  The next governor had hiscommission for "that part of our province of Carolina that lyes northand east of Cape feare," which was basically the whole of modern North Carolina."

Parker's Recollections tells the saga of his years as a slave in the coastal region of North Carolina from his birth in 1838 to his flight to a Union gunboat in 1862.
One of the most exceptional parts of Parker's story is that he was hired out, originally with his mother Millie, later on his own, to approximately a dozen different owners while he was a boy and young man.
We found the original plantation house and a slave cabin still standing, as well as a burial plot that may be the final resting place of Parker's mother Millie.
