	Nutrient and Multi-Species Criteria Standard for the Chowan River, North Carolina
		During the late spring and early summer of 1978, the Chowan River in northeastern North Carolina experienced an extensive proliferation of the small "pulse" algae blooms that had occurred in the river during 1976 and 1977.
		Species of the three genera that periodically bloom in the river were isolated and a minimum nutrient requirement for each was determined.
		The results suggest that the Chowan River is in excess of necessary nutrients for moderate algal growth.

		Chowan was formed in 1670 as a precinct in Albemarle County.
		It was named in honor of the Indian tribe Chowan, which lived in the northeastern part of the Colony.
		It is in the northeastern section of the State and is bounded by Albemarle Sound, Chowan River, and Bertie, Hertford, Gates and Perquimans counties.

		Located on the beautiful Chowan River, Winton was incorporated as a town in 1766, It replaced Cotton's Ferry as the county seat, and where the first court had been held.
		Both U.S. Highway 13, (North/South), and U.S. Highway 158, (East/West) intersect in the County, and are to be upgraded to four-lane highways by act of the Highway Trust Fund of the 1989 Session of the North Carolina General Assembly.

	The Freshwater Asian Clam Corbicula fluminea as a Factor Affecting Nutrient Cycling in the Chowan River, NC
		Recent nuisance blue-green algal blooms in the Chowan River, in northeastern North Carolina, have generated concern among state agencies and have prompted research efforts to describe factors controlling algal blooms in the river.
		Blue-greens are the dominant algal group in the Chowan during summer months, so it was important to first determine whether the clam was able to utilize blue-greens as a food source.
		The Asian clam Corbicula fluminea appears to have reached stable densities in the Chowan River, having invaded the upper river and tributaries between 1974 and 1978.

		Chowan was formed in 1670 as a precinct in Albemarle County of the Carolina Colony, and was originally called Shaftsbury Precinct.
		The Precinct's original territory included all the land (inhabitable) west of the Chowan River, as well as the northern half of the peninsula south of the Albemarle Sound and north of the Pamlico Sound.

	Hunchback
		She made an important series of reconnaissance expeditions up the Chowan River 12 to 22 May, destroying a battery and capturing four small ships.
		Confederate positions lined the river; but Union ships passed the batteries, brought supplies to the town, and succeeded in breaking up the attack by 16 April.
		After another expedition up the Chowan River 1 April, she was sent north, and decommissioned at New York 12 June 1865.

	North Carolina Fisheries Association
		The 2001 river herring season came to a close on Feb. 23, a time when the herring fishery traditionally gets underway in the rivers and tributaries to the Albemarle Sound.
		This discretionary quota accounts for the allowable herring harvests in all the rivers and tributaries in the Albemarle Sound area with the exception of the Chowan River.
		Under the current plan the Chowan River pound netters are allocated a quota of 200,000 lbs.

		A new high rise bridge across the mouth of the Chowan river is expected to be complete before the year 2000 and will allow unimpeded access to the river for tall masted sailing vessels.
		The lower Chowan from the US17 Bridge north to Holiday Island is approximately two to three miles wide and from Holiday Island north to the upper reaches narrows to approximately 1/4 to 1/2 mile in width.

	Hubbell Pioneers in North Carolina
		About 1648 several Virginians purchased land along the Chowan River, which flows in Albemarle Sound, from the natives.
		However, the first suggestion of a North Carolina settlement is found in a grant made in 1653 to the Rev. Roger Green of Virginia.
		They were married in Bertie County, which is across the Chowan River from Chowan County.
