Byrd was back in action in April 2004 and although he has a well-earned reputation for his jabbing and moving rather than valor, but he put on a bravura performance in making his second title defense and pounding out a hard fought 12-round draw with Andrew Golata.
Byrd was back in action this past November and in a battle between a dump truck and a Honda Accord, the IBF heavyweight champion managed to shift gears and rally from a second round knockdown to score a slender 12-round split decision over monstrous Jameel McCline.
Byrd bent at the waist and attempted duck away from the heavy artillery, however, the challenger connected with a right hand high on his skull followed by a volley of sweeping shots and a crushing right cross to the cheekbone.

Byrd used Williamson for sparring sessions for two fights: once in May of 2001 when he was preparing to face Maurice "Mo Betta" Harris and again when he was preparing to fight Andrew Golota in April 2004.
Byrd is considered one of the most well-spoken boxers in the sport; however, he may have met his match in Williamson, who earned a master's degree (Master of Arts) in administrative services from University of Northern Michigan in 1998.
Byrd's last fight was on Nov. 13, 2004, where he was knocked down by Jameel "Big Time" McCline in the second round but survived and fought valiantly to successfully defend his IBF crown, winning a split decision.
